Staff Software Engineer, Backend Web Development

You’ll work in concert with teammates from across the company to build a rich understanding of product needs and bring those ideas to life. We expect you to play a critical role in designing, developing, and maintaining our web applications and services. Your expertise in back-end technologies and how they interact with front-end frameworks will be instrumental in creating robust, scalable, and user-friendly software solutions that will help Scythe realize its big mission.

What you’ll do at Scythe  

• Design, develop, and deploy scalable and responsive web applications using a combination of back-end technologies.
• Provide technical leadership and guidance to a team of software engineers, driving best practices, code reviews, and mentoring junior team members.
• Take ownership of feature development ensuring high-quality, tested code, scalability, and performance.
• Develop and implement comprehensive testing strategies to ensure the reliability and stability of the software, including unit tests, integration tests, and automated testing frameworks.
• Collaborate with data platform engineers to write, deploy, and maintain data pipelines to surface and land data in to backend application databases.
• Communicate with front end and mobile engineers to support API needs.

What you know well

• Minimum 7 years or more of professional experience in software development, with a focus on Full Stack Web development.
• Expertise in Django and PostgreSQL.
• Expertise in Python and experience with data pipelines built to feed web application data sources that have run on Airflow, Dagster, or Luigi.
• Proficiency with GraphQL, especially Apollo GraphQL.
• Proficiency with CI/CD pipelines, containerization (e.g., Docker), and cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure) for deploying and managing web applications.
• Demonstrated ability to lead and mentor a team of software engineers, driving technical excellence and fostering a collaborative environment.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to effectively collaborate with cross-functional teams and stakeholders.

What you’ve maybe done

• Worked with robots and/or robot applications using ROS.
• Worked on a Data Platform team to move land data in to application databases.
• Lead a small team of Full Stack Web developers.
• Worked in a large scale web application deployed on AWS.

The Staff Software Engineer, Backend Web Development position has an expected minimum annual cash salary of $120,000. The actual pay may be higher depending on your skills, qualifications, and experience.
