Mission Overview & Responsibilities: 

Our 60+ product teams across The New York Times produce operational data that is shared with our data ecosystem allowing data engineers, analysts and data architects to enrich and aggregate this data into meaningful, long-living data products that expose key metrics – allowing the business to make important decisions and report the health of the business to all partners.

The Data Governance and Infrastructure team is a remote-friendly team responsible for building the platform tooling delivering the capabilities of ingestion, transformation, orchestration, infrastructure and data management, observability and governance. Our platform enables data producers and data consumers to reliably share their operational data and create high-quality domain-data products. 

What You'll Do:

  • You will partner with Product and Engineering leads to design the technical strategy to achieve our platform vision for data ingestion, transformation and governance at The Times
  • You will translate business goals into practical technical solutions with realistic milestones
  • You will organize and guide balanced decisions across your peers for architecture, design, and implementation details
  • You will gather support on your technical strategy through collaborative discussions with adjacent teams and other partners
  • You will create strategies for delivering new capabilities while paying down technical debt and investing in engineering excellence
  • You will advise engineering management and product management on assessing technical complexity and resourcing needs
  • You will support engineers in your team on architecture, development, testing, delivery, and operations
  • You will mentor engineers to level up the group's abilities
  • You will report to the Senior Engineering Manager for Data Governance and Infrastructure

Basic Qualifications: 


  • Passion for big data and cloud-infrastructure automation
  • 6+ years of overall experience with cloud infrastructure architecture and configuration, especially with cloud-native data-warehousing solutions like Snowflake or BigQuery
  • Strong software engineering experience in at least one programming language Python or Go
  • Strong experience with Terraform or similar Infrastructure as Code platform
  • Strong experience building and shipping platform tooling, facilitating wide adoption in an organization
  • Experience with GitOps and CI/CD pipeline and build tools such as Drone, Argo

Preferred Qualifications:

 

  • Familiarity with modern-data-stack tools and services such as dbt and FiveTran
  • Experience with observability tools such as Datadog and Sumo Logic
  • Kanban or other agile methodologies

This role may require limited on-call hours. An on-call schedule will be determined when you join, taking into account team size and other variables.

The annual base pay range for this role is between:
$160,000$175,000 USD
