Job Description
As a Staff Software Engineer on our Kubernetes Platform Engineering team, you will build and operate our managed Kubernetes platform in a distributed AWS environment which runs Marqeta and all of our production workloads.
We are looking for experienced Kubernetes Engineers with deep passion for distributed systems to join us on our mission to optimize and expand our platform!
We work Flexible First. This role can be performed remotely anywhere within the United States or from our Oakland office. We’d love for you to join us!
The Impact You'll Have
- Build, test, and continuously improve our modern, repeatable Kubernetes infrastructure
- Leverage IaC to define all of our repeatable infrastructure in Terraform
- Create secure, available, fully automated, repeatable, and Cloud Native infrastructure
- Reduce operating costs by creating the infrastructure and scaffolding for our engineering user community to deploy multi-region, highly-available services

Who You AreÂ
- 8+ years of relevant experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or 6 years of experience with a Master's degree; or a PhD with 3 years experience. In lieu of a degree, 11+ years of relevant experience may suffice.
- Operations and provisioning experience in Kubernetes or EKS.
- Experience with Kubernetes components like Karpenter, OPA Gatekeeper, Crossplane, AWS Secrets Plugin, CNI, and Service Mesh.Â
Nice-To-Haves
- Familiarity with IaC pipelines and Helm charts
- Hands on experience with AWS CLI and AWS Console
- Programming knowledge in Go, Python, or Java
- Experience in software delivery pipelines and CI/CD systems

Compensation and Benefits
Marqeta is a Flex First company which allows you to choose your best working environment, whether that be from home or at a company office. To support Flex First, we calibrate pay to a competitive value according to working location. Compensation is aligned according to three tiers within the United States:
- National: A baseline tier that applies to most of the geographic territory of the United States.
- Premium: Slightly elevated from the National tier, and oriented toward a narrower set of higher cost-of-living areas, such as Los Angeles CA and Seattle WA
- Premium Plus: A tier for the most expensive working areas, like the San Francisco Bay area and New York City.

When determining salaries, we consider several factors including, but not limited to, skills, prior experience, and work location. The new-hire base salary range for this position is:
- National:Â $121,000 - $162,000
- Premium: $137,000 - $183,000
- Premium Plus: $152,000 - $203,000Â
