Staff Software Engineer - Operating System

IonQ is developing the world's most powerful full-stack quantum computer based on trapped-ion technology. We are seeking a Staff Software Engineer to design, develop, test, debug, deploy, maintain, document, and deliver solutions for securing our next-generation enterprise-grade quantum operating system. Never worked on a quantum operating system? It’s much like an operating system for a distributed storage system or a robot, managing feedback loops at various time scales between sensors and actuators to create a precisely tuned environment where we can perform high fidelity quantum computations. In this role, you’ll help put in place solutions to secure the world’s best commercially-available quantum computers.Â
Responsibilities:
- You will own the design and development of a major software security platform, tooling, infrastructure, define all aspects of security and access control in our product roadmaps, own their deliverables and have opportunities to build them from scratch.Â
- Assist in the career development of others, providing mentorship on advanced technical issues
- Collaborate with an experienced interdisciplinary staff to deliver highly secure software applications that live on core systems and embedded edge devices that control and run our quantum computers.
- Approach problems pragmatically, with sound judgment while balancing highest priority work and the long term view of the product .
- Help us build and reinforce sound security practices within our engineering organization and eep us accountable now for what will go bad later.
The ideal candidate will have experience leading product development efforts, projects, and initiatives around application security for HPC environments. You’ll be able to balance technical expertise and are savvy with strong business judgment to make great technology choices.Â
You’d be a good fit with:
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent practical experience—untraditional backgrounds welcomed
- 5+ years experience in software development in one or more general-purpose programming languages (like Go, Rust, Java, or C++)
- Good understanding of security issues and impact types.Â
- Experience with threat modeling.
- Working knowledge of risk frameworks, vulnerability platforms
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- A love of collaborating in an interdisciplinary environment
- Empathy: you'll work closely with our internal team of physicists who depend on our software every dayÂ
You’d be a great fit with:
- Master’s degree or PhD in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or related technical field
- Proven track record in Go and/or Rust
- Expertise in HPC security environments
- Experience with programmatic device control (SCPI, MODBUS, etc. over serial, USB, TCP)
- Experience with threat modeling.
- Familiarity with complex distributed hardware systems
- Familiarity with digital signal processing
Our HQ is located in College Park, Maryland and we are a 15 minute metro ride from Washington DC. We have also recently announced our new manufacturing and production facility in the Seattle, Washington area. We are actively building out teams in the Washington D.C., Seattle and Toronto metro areas and will want to locate you in one of these geographies. However, IonQ will be expanding into additional geographies both domestically and internationally so don’t let this stop you from applying.
