Staff Technical Program Manager

As the Staff Technical Program Manager on the Data Center Operations team, you’ll manage the Business Continuity Program (BCP) concerning the availability and reliability of DigitalOcean’s systems and microservices and will drive value delivery for a set of technical programs.
This includes managing data center expansions into new markets, coordinating data center migration projects, and developing repeatable processes to improve future programs within Infrastructure. This individual will be an experienced cross-functional leader who champions continuous improvement and thrives in a fast-paced environment. They will apply technical literacy along with program management experience to navigate delivering on commitments as a leader on their team.
In this role, you will partner with Infrastructure, Business and Engineering leaders to drive the delivery of valuable, often complex, technical programs to achieve significant DO objectives. You will embody servant leadership to ensure efficient, effective value delivery. You will be a proactive collaborator at all times while driving consensus where needed and influencing decisions when teams are stuck. Â
What You’ll Be Doing:- Defining automation, metrics collections, tooling, and occasionally features to directly improve the reliability, resiliency, and scaling of our IaaS, SaaS and PaaS product offerings and architecture
- Collaborate with teams on researching and fine-tuning their service level indicators (SLIs) and service level objectives (SLOs) to drive the best outcomes for customers
- Coordinate with Internal Audit on a regular basis to provide critical support for audit activities and managing cross-functional initiatives
- Working with internal stakeholders and engineering leaders to define the architectures and practices that should be adopted in order to deliver on our engineering and operational goals
- Establishing best practices for development, architecture, deployment, and operations
- Working with internal stakeholders to improve services and processes (including architecture reviews, incident response, monitoring) in a cross-functional manner throughout the engineering organization.
- Facilitate DigitalOcean’s culture of learning by providing insight and recommendations for improvement
- Coaching teams and individuals on reliability best practices and solutions
- Providing technical leadership - best practices, testing, performance, reliability
- Setting BCP performance goals for internal stakeholders; evaluating performance; providing coaching and facilitating professional development
- Developing and sustaining a business continuity management plan that outlines procedures for combating internal and external threats and recovery plans for vital functions post-event
- Conduct risk assessments to evaluate potential disruptions in the company’s operations, systems, and infrastructure
- Coordinate with external vendors and partners to ensure preparedness during emergencies
- Train staff on emergency response policies and explain their necessity for safety purposesÂ
- Distinguished track record with experience implementing reliability, process, and scaling solutionsÂ
- Demonstrated ability to lead positive change; empower people; cultivate product technology visions and innovative solutions
- Possess strong presentation skills with the ability to articulate complex information clearly and effectively to diverse audiences, including executive leadershipÂ
- The ability to adapt and handle multiple competing priorities
- Familiarity or experience with Prometheus for metrics collection is a plusÂ
- Clear and concise communication skills are crucial for developing and articulating business continuity plans to various stakeholders
- Experience implementing disaster recovery best practices
- Develop robust solutions that facilitate streamlined resolution of customer incidents through use of technologies for automation, deflection, and issue management
- Advocate of effective development environments with the use of CI/CD tooling and configuration management technologies such as Chef or Ansible
- Strong critical thinking skills to identify potential threats and to plan for various contingenciesÂ
- Demonstrated leadership is key, particularly during crises when clear guidance is necessary to maintain order and ensure the execution of contingency plans
- Robust problem solving abilities to devise effective solutions in the face of emergencies.
- Proficiency in technology is a requirement, as many business continuity plans involve an understanding of various IT systems, software, and databases
- Strong analytical skills, including the ability to analyze potential risks, including assessment of impact, and the formulation of corresponding mitigation plans

- We reward our employees. The base salary range for this position is between $175,000 - $215,000 based on relevant years of experience and skills. The salary range for this role is specific to candidates located within the U.S. and will vary for candidates outside the U.S.. Employees may qualify for a bonus in addition to base salary; bonus amounts are determined based on company and individual performance. We also provide equity compensation to eligible employees including grants of equity upon hire and the option to participate in our Employee Stock Purchase Program.
