We are looking for a Staff Thermal & Structural Analysis Engineer. As a member of the Engineering Organization, you’ll be part of a cross-functional team whose mission is to lead IonQ on its journey to build the world’s best quantum computers to solve the world’s most complex problems.Â
You will collaborate with a highly interdisciplinary team of atomic physicists, optical engineers, opto-mechanical engineers, electrical engineers, cryosystem engineers, thermal engineers, and program managers to influence, design, and build our upcoming products. You will contribute across the entire product lifecycle from conceptual design through first engineering units. You’ll develop requirements, perform trade studies, and design our current and next generation hardware for our quantum computers.
Responsibilities:Â
- Model system dynamics including modal analysis, loads, vibration, heat transfer and thermal stresses, CFD, failure mechanisms, and aging to optimize designs and system performance
- Coordinate with design engineers to analyze, refine, and document design solutions
- Plan and support testing to correlate models and simulations
- Support configuration development and trade studiesÂ
- Characterize performance of mechanical systems and impact of environmental factors
- Support development of system, subsystem, and component requirements, flow down, and verification planning
- Contribute to IonQ analysis best practices and knowledge
You’d be a good fit with:Â
- B.S. degree in engineering and at least 8+ years of relevant commercial experience
- Experience with analysis of highly integrated systems such as automotive, aircraft/spacecraft, medical or industrial systems
- Proficient in stress analysis, classical strength analysis methods, and commercial mechanical stress analysis modeling tools
- Experience solving a variety of thermal problems demonstrating breadth in analysis application
- Experience with Finite Element Analysis, including creating, analyzing, and solving models
- Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills and experience working in a highly integrated cross-functional team environment
- Excellent verbal and written communications and presentation skills are required
You’d be a great fit with:Â
- M.S. degree in engineering and at least 10+ years of relevant experience
- Experience with mechanical design and analyses of software tools such as SolidWorks, ANSYS Fluent, ANSYS IcePak, COMSOL
- Demonstrated process automation experience using scripting tools (VBA, Matlab, Python, etc.)
- Familiarity with computational fluid dynamics
- Experience analyzing cryogenics and vacuum systems and components
- Experience analyzing rack-mounted electronics enclosures
- Experience with shock and vibration isolation analysis methods and techniquesÂ
- Knowledge of trapped-ion quantum computing systems
Our HQ is located in College Park, Maryland and we are a 15 minute metro ride from Washington DC. We have also recently announced our new manufacturing and production facility in the Seattle, Washington area. We are actively building out teams in the Washington D.C., Seattle, Boston and Toronto metro areas and will want to locate you in one of these geographies. However, IonQ will be expanding into additional geographies both domestically and internationally so don’t let this stop you from applying.
