Job Description

Our mission at Atomic Machines is to bring autonomous bits-to-atoms manufacturing of anything at any scale to the world, and we are well on our way. We are developing an entirely new class of manufacturing foundry for micro- and nano-scale machines, and we are using that foundry to create products the world has heretofore been unable to build. Our first device has exceptionally strong and large-scale product-market fit: it is both iconic of what our platform can do and a driver of very significant enterprise scale.

Joining forces with us means becoming part of an incredibly talented, inventive and passionate multi-disciplinary team running hard to make our platform, devices and vision a reality. You will have the opportunity to help define the company from its earliest days. You’ll be challenged to learn and grow as a builder and a leader as the company itself grows rapidly. And you will receive significant equity compensation - you’ll truly be a company owner and benefit financially from our overall success.

Our offices are located in Berkeley and Santa Clara, California.

About the role:

We are seeking a passionate startup HR Consultant to be our interim Head of People for 3-6 months to develop and execute HR practices ranging from performance reviews, learning and development trainings, employee retention strategies, and managing all employee relations. The right consultant will understand business priorities and translate them into the highest impact work. They will help business leaders look around corners with data-driven recommendations that improve performance, retention, and the overall employee experience.

This role could convert to full-time for the right candidate and would be located in either our Berkeley or Santa Clara office M-F. This position is located in either our Santa Clara or Berkeley office (or both) at least three days a week.

What you’ll do:

  • Manage and resolve complex employee relations issues. Conducts effective, thorough, and objective investigations.
  • Manage our immigration process, partnering with our external immigration firm to support our international employees.
  • Manage our HR systems, always assessing the quality of each and ensuring we are maximizing the value of each.
  • Maintain in-depth knowledge of legal requirements related to day-to-day management of employees, reducing legal risks and ensuring regulatory compliance. Partner with our external legal firm as needed/required.
  • Meet regularly with management and employees to ensure business objectives, performance, and employee satisfaction are aligned.
  • Provide day-to-day performance management guidance to our managers (e.g., coaching, counseling, career development, disciplinary actions).
  • Assess our benefits plans and price other options in the marketplace to ensure we offer the best benefits we can afford for our size and location.
  • Assess and partner with various L&D platforms (e.g., Udemy, LinkedIn Learning) and suggest various trainings to help our teams develop in ways specific to each of them.

What you’ll need:

  • 5– 7 years of progressive HR leadership experience in a technical company. Experience in a hardware startup is preferred.
  • A true love for working with people, getting to know them, and being intrinsically motivated to help them succeed.
  • A flexible skill set, including the ability to think strategically, execute tactically, and collaborate across many teams, levels, and situations.
  • The ability to successfully monitor the "pulse" of Atomizers to ensure a high level of employee engagement.
  • Deep understanding of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging principles and their application in team building and collaboration.
  • Experience in CA people practices laws and best practices for a startup tech company.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a love for using data to drive decisions.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • High level of discretion, confidentiality, and ethics.
  • Ability to cope well with ambiguity and change in a dynamic environment.
  • Excellent communication skills, including extensive experience meeting and presenting to senior executives.
  • Ability to work from either our Santa Clara or Berkeley office at least three days a week (daily is preferred).
  • B.S. in Human Resources, Business Management, or a related field.
