The L533 Software Engineering & Computing (SWEC) Department in the Software Engineering Innovation Center is seeking a Principal Engineer to be the Group Lead for Strategy & Execution, a new position that is part of the department leadership team.

This group lead will have an opportunity to partner with the Department Manager and Chief Engineer to evolve L533 outcomes and strategic direction, shape new work, and lead key related activities. They will supervise, mentor, and coach a diverse team of senior software engineers in their career growth by identifying, encouraging, and enabling direct reports to take ownership of their careers and seek growth opportunities. They will also work with their direct reports to shape and frame impactful goals for their tasks.

Key Functions:

  • Direct Supervisor for select department leadership staff members
    • First line manager focused on coaching their direct reports and actively identifying opportunities for staff career growth
    • Primary point of contact on HR matters to staff members in their group.
    • Works in partnership with Project Leaders on an as required and on-going basis to align staff member goals to project outcomes.
    • Executes Clear Conversation and Pay and Performance processes with staff members in their group.
    • Facilitates the professional and career development of assigned staff members through positive leadership, coaching, communication, and recognition.

  • Active in department leadership, contributing to department business operations.
    • Provides strategic direction for department's recruiting and hiring of full time and intern staff.
    • Builds and maintains relationships across MITRE projects and organizations and helps the leadership team stay informed of work program needs
    • Works with department and division leadership team on special initiatives to grow and shape services and capabilities.
    • Proxy for department manager in MITRE internal IT systems

  • Provides department strategic leadership
    • Supports, and leads, as needed, the work shaping, future planning, and strategic staffing discussions within the department
    • Anticipates future skill set needs and works to develop them through training, hiring, and personnel growth
    • Builds partnerships across MITRE to support organic work program growth and increased department impact

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, or related field
  • 5+ years of relevant experience
  • Passion for working with people and coaching talent
  • Strong technical leader interested in staying technically informed
  • Strong people leader with 2+ years demonstrated experience as a GL, TL or PL
  • Ability to develop trusted relationships with team members and project leads
  • Willingness to develop a business network and engage in finding great work that aligns with department strategic direction and career goals of staff

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in technical field of study
  • Demonstrated success in leading software engineering teams
  • Knowledge of MITRE people management systems and processes
  • Knowledge of MITRE business operations systems and processes
  • Proven ability to work across the software engineering lifecycle including requirements, architecture, design, implementation, testing, and deployment, while taking on ever-increasing areas of responsibility
  • Knowledge of software engineering lifecycle; Agile, DevSecOps and Cloud frameworks and implementation; software architecture; software process improvement; software languages and development methodologies and tools
