Subject Matter Expert (GIS)

About the role

In this role, you’ll be responsible for helping to design and develop technical solutions leveraging a range of GIS technologies.  The ideal candidate must maintain technical proficiency with geospatial software and an understanding of the underlying data. Leveraging your experience performing geospatial analysis, you will help define and execute our solution.  As a subject matter expert, you will also work with our Business Development team to support solutioning and writing of proposal opportunities. 

It is imperative that the GIS Subject Matter Expert has broad experience within core geospatial systems and analysis but is an expert in at least 3 of the following (listed in order of preference): ArcGIS software; Merging of multiple layers or data sets; Creating visuals in either GeoPDF, webapps, or custom reports; Designing reports for end users; Data ETL (Extract transform load) techniques; UI/UX design (webpages, reports, etc).

Responsibilities:

  • Oversees all geospatial data and software to ensure accuracy and reliability.
  • Understand and ensure the correct projections are used when merging data.
  • Knowledge of industry standard software and recommendations on what should be off the shelf or custom built.
  • Utilizes expertise and leadership skills to direct staff and to resolve issues to ensure project goals and requirements are met.
  • Communicates with end-users to provide timely and accurate information and status updates.
  • Applies in-depth understanding of concepts and procedures within own area and basic knowledge of other areas to resolve issues that have impact beyond own area.
  • Demonstrates a comprehensive understanding of how areas of geospatial analytics collectively integrate to contribute to achieving business goals.
  • Ensures essential procedures are followed and contributes to defining standards.
  • Persuades and influences others through communication and diplomacy skills; may negotiate with external parties.
  • Assist client delivery teams with design and development of technical solutions for implementation and deployment based on client requirements.
  • Responsible for proposal solutioning and technical writing, as well as responsible for authoring technical white papers.

Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of experience geospatial analysis.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
  • 4+ years of experience performing advanced data ETL combining data from multiple disparate sources.
  • Certifications or demonstrable past performance in ArcGIS or GIS visualization.
  • Experience with ArcGIS, QGIS, or other non-proprietary GIS solution.
  • Understanding of user centered design and history of developing end user interfaces, reports, or dashboards.
  • Excellent communication skills (both written and verbal) with technical and non-technical audiences, specifically briefing senior decision makers.

Preferred:

  • Experience with publicly available federal databases
  • Familiar with Python, Azure, or dashboarding software
  • Master's degree in related field
