What you will do
The Subject Matter Technical Expert - Hardware CoE is a critical role in the Central Engineering Hardware Center of Excellence (CoE) team that will provide senior level engineering, product, or program manager candidates with an outstanding career growth opportunity. This long-term growth role provides exposure to the JCI engineering network, its global leaders, and the JCI Executive Leadership Team. This is a remote position that may require up to 25% travel.
The role has both near-term and long-term objectives. In the near-term, this Subject Matter Technical Expert (SMTE) role will support the LEAP initiative working across the Product Business Units (PBU's); partnering with Procurement to drive platforming, standardization, and rationalization of engineered products to extract value from commodity sub-categories. The SMTE will interface with PBU Engineering Teams to gain alignment, approvals, and execute plans that are derived from sub-category cluster analysis. Included in this effort will be focused drive to consolidate engineering design standards, material selection matrices, and Common Global Part Libraries.
Longer-term, the SMTE will partner with Product Management and PBU Engineering to understand product roadmaps to determine the technologies needed at the part category level to support product designs. This knowledge, its due diligence, and analysis form the charter for the planned Strategic Category Teams (SCT) that will be established and led by the SMTE. The SCT will triangulate between Product Engineering, Procurement, and Suppliers and will develop and publish technology roadmaps, preferred solution, and early supplier involvement opportunities, all of which will increase JCI's speed to market.
The SMTE role will report into the Director of Global Hardware Platforming.

How you will do it
- Provide technical liaising between internal functional departments across all Johnson Controls PBU's and external resource teams, and facilitate PBU input on agreement decisions and actions in the following areas:
- Lead the drawing and specification reviews by category level
- Assist in collecting missing technical information not readily available on drawings
- Provide preliminary review input of modified drawings
- Lead the cluster analysis, championing the decision-making process in the path forward (Freedom to Move Analysis), and provide SMTE sign-off of the process
- Interpret design requirements, agency guidelines, and rules / regulations; and support technical discussions with approval agencies to obtain needed approvals
- Assist in the engineering change implementation, ERP support, etc.
- Support Procurement in supplier discussions, negotiations, etc.
- Support tooling assessments, production / manufacturing changes, etc.
- Preliminary review of technical publication updates
- Project Management Execution, within the category of assignment
- Responsible to co-deliver with Procurement the savings targets for assigned categories
- Determine timelines and budgets for completion of engineering tasks
- Management of critical dates, milestones, and budget
- KPI preparation and regular report-outs
- Communicate roadblocks to management, and assist in developing mitigation plans to maintain schedule and budget commitments
- Lead Design Standards Consolidation for material commodity sub-categories to drive part reuse and shared designs across the PBU's.
- Inventory design standards from PBU's and analyze for commonality and adjacent themes
- Focus on design standards that drive downstream value and savings impact
- Assure design standards are utilized as part of new product design
- Establish Strategic Category Engineering Team function. These teams will triangulate between Product Design Engineering, Procurement, and Suppliers to:
- Deliver early supplier involvement
- Align technology roadmaps
- Align on capability, product launch risk, and quality targets
What we look for
Required
- 8+ years of engineering experience
- Proven project management and organizational skills in a cross-functional team environment
- Strong interpersonal skills and decision-making ability
- Demonstrated team leadership skills, coaches others toward positive outcomes, and is considered a role model
- Effective and professional communication with the ability to write reports and convey detailed technical information
- Proficiency of MS Office
Preferred
- Experience in hardware consolidation and product platforming
- Experience with Windchill and Johnson Controls design programs
- Ability for occasional travel
- Ability to work with global matrixed organization
