We have an opportunity for a Substation Engineer I to join our Engineering team. In this role, you will lead substation design projects while working with both internal and external partners, performing a variety of engineering work in designing, planning, supporting construction and installation of substations structures, systems, and components. You will work with suppliers, order materials, issue drawings and everything around supporting the creation of construction packages. You must be a diligent individual with a dedication to quality, accuracy, and the ability to organize and prioritize engineering decisions. Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to work in both a team environment and on self-directed tasks are vital.

This is a hybrid-remote position reporting to the Cedar Rapids, IA officeThe successful candidate must reside in Iowa.

Job Responsibilities

• Works on routine assignments in a structured environment under close supervision, typically with a more experienced engineer's review and oversight.
• Participates in Safe Start training to understand the philosophy of zero injuries. Follows safety rules and practices to identify and correct unsafe conditions for self and team.
• Uses standard practices and procedures to solve problems limited in scope. Implements alternative methods or resources for getting routine work done. Applies governmental and organizational engineering standards.
• Understands the basic need of combining technical and cost effective criteria into an overall solution through developing a budget, schedule and scope of work by working with the customer.
• Demonstrates awareness of the corporate balance sheet and income statement and understands the difference between a rate payer and shareholder. Learns and participates in the departmental budgeting process. Learns to apply the chart of accounts appropriately to ERP.
• Learns the basics of the property unit catalog. Understands procedure FIN 102 (Purchasing of Materials and Services) and ensures correct use of procurement/payment tools to conduct business. Accesses COGNOS reports to assure SOX compliance.
• Acquires an understanding of appropriate communications with vendors, field construction, operations personnel, and internal stakeholders. Learns to document project activities and decisions for future reference.
• All other duties as assigned.

Job Qualifications

• This position requires a four year degree from an accredited college or university, within an engineering program that is accredited through the Engineering Accreditation Commission.
• An internship or co-op in engineering is preferred.

Other Requirements

• This job is covered by the Department of Transportation regulations on drug and alcohol testing (CFR 49, Parts 40 and 199), and is subject to drug testing according to said regulations.
