Intern responsibilities will vary based upon your area of interest and department placement. Applying to this opportunity confirms your interest in being considered for one or more of the below departments for summer 2024:

Customer Enablement Products (Syracuse, NY)

The Customer Enablement Products team is responsible for strategy, design and development of low-to-moderate income energy efficiency and bill assistance programs in New York and Massachusetts. For the summer, you will support the day-to-day responsibilities of the low-to-moderate income which includes collaborating with utilities across NY as well as NYSERDA and the NYS Department of Public Service Staff. This may include attending calls with these entities, working on program reporting, design and development of programs, data analysis, research, creating program process documents, and more.

Distributed Energy Resources Grid Services (Syracuse, NY)

The Distributed Energy Resources (DER) Grid Services team makes it easier and more valuable for customers to adopt and use distributed energy resources. This team works to expand the scope of existing system-wide demand response programs to compensate customers to alleviate localized grid constraints. This team also develops non-wires alternative solutions to better leverage customer DER, with the objective to defer or reduce the need for distribution system upgrades. In addition, we monetize the value of the company's capacity rights from installed solar plus storage, incentivized energy efficiency, combined heat and power, and fuel cell assets via enrollment and management in the Independent System Operator of New England (ISO-NE) Forward Capacity Market. For the summer, you will be able to develop an understanding of National Grid's Distributed Energy Resources existing programs, functions, business objectives, and strategic priorities. You will also be able to participate in DER team meetings, other collaborative meetings among internal teams, relevant external stakeholder engagement, and social activities. Involvement in our employee resource groups and community service events are encouraged within this role.

Employee & Labor Relations (Syracuse, NY)

Our Employee & Labor Relations team is responsible for proposing, interpreting, and administering labor contractors for our union workforce. For the summer you will support the administration and maintenance of our Company's labor relations activities. You will work with team members to research matters related to contract interpretation, application of company policies, grievances, and other laborrRelations subjects.

Investment Recovery (Liverpool, NY)

The Investment Recovery team supports the end-of-life activities to National Grid's physical assets. Our services produce a measurable value through programs that safely and responsibly identify, recycle, reuse, redeploy, re-process, sell, and dispose of surplus assets. As a Gridtern, you would have the opportunity to assist in the creation of surplus material request for quotations (RFQ's) and non-standard auction lists, develop IR toolkit for stakeholders, work on further developing internal and external marketing lists, conduct analysis of material sales to identify strengths and weaknesses, and assist in expanding recycling and embedding sustainability initiatives and circular economy principles.

NY Electric Process and Performance Improvement (Syracuse, NY)

The Process and Performance Improvement team supports our New York Operations organization with the goal to increase efficiency, deliver value, and drive change. The team aims to engrain a mindset of modernization and constant improvement throughout the organization. For the summer you will work alongside other team members to document current state processes and analyze for waste and improvement opportunities.

Process and Performance (Syracuse, NY)

Stakeholder Management & Major Permits(Syracuse, NY)

At National Grid, we hold ourselves and our partners to a high standard of values and expectations for our stakeholder engagement program. The Stakeholder Management team is responsible for strategic communications to prevent and mitigate negative stigmatization arising from public response to our project delivery activities including construction. For the summer you will assist with creating outreach and marketing material, oversee stakeholder management tools, and developing project messaging for our customers.

Strategic Communications-UNY (Syracuse, NY)

The Strategic Communications team supports our internal stakeholders to share important information that our customers want and need to know regarding our investments, customers, and work in the community. The team also shares up-to-the-minute information on power outages that may or may not be weather related and planned power interruptions. We are constantly in contact with media, providing content for social media purposes and sharing information about and with our employees. For the summer, you will support the overall corporate communications strategy to advance messaging in local and regional media. You will contribute to the corporate storytelling process by proactively promoting company activities in areas including economic development, corporate social responsibility, electric vehicles, clean energy, and other priority areas. Additional projects include supporting strategic communications managers with strategy development, emergency response, public events, as well as other activities that will help further position National Grid as a leader in the clean energy transition.

US Procurement (Syracuse, NY)

Our US Procurement team provides Procurement services for Energy Efficiency Services in the US, as well as Marketing-related efforts both in the US and Globally. This team looks to maximize value for our customers by providing strategic sourcing solutions that appropriately balance customer satisfaction, quality, and cost effectiveness. This team supports both our New York and Massachusetts procurement needs. For the summer you will support the team with their day-to-day functions as you learn from subject matter experts in the procurement field. Specific summer projects will be shared during the interview process.

What You'll Need

  • Availability to start on program start date, June 3, 2024 and work full-time (40 hours a week) throughout your duration of the summer
  • Registered in school as a full-time student and continuing education full-time for Fall 2024 Semester
  • Pursuing a Bachelor's, or Master's degree
  • Majoring in Business, Communications, Finance, Data Analytics, Supply Chain Management, Environmental Science, Sustainability or a related field
  • Accumulated 18 or more credits and be 18 years of age
  • Work authorization that does not now or in the future require sponsorship of a visa for employment authorization in the United States
  • Located within a commutable distance to the identified work location for the summer
  • Some Gridtern positions will require a valid US Driver's license. This qualification will be included in the department specific Gridtern role(s) descriptions at point of interview

Salary Range

$17.00 - $23.00 an hour (Undergraduate Student)

$24.00 - $29.00 an hour (Graduate Student)

Candidates will be assessed and provided offers based on major, degree type, and class year. Our Gridtern Program does not offer relocation, housing assistance, or public transportation reimbursement for Gridterns; however, we can provide a list of resources to utilize in making your arrangements.
