Intern responsibilities will vary based upon your area of interest and department placement. Applying to this opportunity confirms your interest in being considered for one or more of the below departments for summer 2024:
Compliance Assurance (Melville, NY)
The Compliance Assurance Team performs compliance assurance assessments of our company to ensure construction and maintenance activities are performed and documented with all applicable Federal and State code requirements, work methods, policies, and procedures. The team also facilitates regulatory audits, responds to PSC inquiries and compliance finding reporting. For the summer, you will manage engagement with state regulators, facilitate audits, respond to regulatory inquiries and compliance finding reporting. You will also provide recommendations and assist in implementation of corrective actions to improve quality and safety of operations performance.
Customer Meter Services (CMS) Resource Coordination (Melville, NY)
The Resource Coordination team manages and coordinates our resources to execute National Grid's work plan in the most efficient way and at the most efficient time. The team manages the workload and resources to ensure regulatory, budget, work performance, productivity, and customer expectations are realized. To do so, this team manages many different priorities and work to reduce workload through work bundling and strategically completing jobs together. For the summer, you will be dedicated to the Work Bundling and Efficiencies efforts as well as CMS Resource Coordination. Work bundling is focused on reducing customer impacts and increasing operational efficiency through data analytics and process improvement. CMS coordination will provide a level of knowledge in day-to-day gas operations, workload management, and resource management. You will also assist with frequent project-based data analytics, day-to-day analytics, operations support, monthly reporting of units and dollars, and researching new work bundling efforts through interviews with the business and supporting data.
Electrical Business Unit, Software Engineering - On My Way (Hicksville, NY)
The US Electric - Software Engineering team develops the software for the OnMyWay app and webtool which is used by our Electric field workers and their supervisors in our Upstate New York and Massachusetts service territories. For the summer, you will be working on design, coding, and unit testing of software using React and/or Node.js for the OnMyWay iPad app and webtool. This team follows an Agile/Scrum process.
Gas Control (Melville, NY)
The Gas Control Team is tasked with continuously monitoring all of National Grid's natural gas transmission and distribution systems. This team ensures that gas service is safely, efficiently, and reliably delivered to our more than 1 million customers. This includes identifying and responding to gas main shutdowns resulting from maintenance and/or emergency operating conditions, ensuring the preservation of life and property. For the summer, you will gain exposure to a wide range of technical and operational opportunities within the Gas Control Room. You will work with the team to perform various analysis/modelling/trending on pressure and flow data to drive insights and decision making, assist in developing and updating existing operational manuals/standards, and implement process improvement/optimization efforts relating to Control Room Management.
NY Gas Complex Capital Construction (Melville, NY)
The NY Gas Complex Capital Construction Team oversees the construction of large and specialized capital infrastructure for the NY Gas Business, including transmission mains, regulator stations, LNG, CNG, Renewable Natural Gas, and other types of civil construction. These projects are executed in line with National Grid's Network Development Process to support Safe and Reliable gas service across New York State. This team also supports construction of projects that contribute to National Grid's vision of a Fossil Free Future, including Renewable Natural Gas, Hydrogen, and Geothermal technology. For the summer, you will have the opportunity to work on various strategic projects for the department such as conducting traffic studies for worker safety, analyzing project data to determine delay causes and presenting options to improve performance, revamping training programs for employees and tracking progress through LMS, and others.
New York Strategy and Performance (NYSAP) (Melville, NY)
NYSAP is the brain to our New York Gas Business. This team has two different parts that work together. The first part focuses on a 3-5 year strategy and aligning the business through process changes, change management and communications. The second piece focuses on reporting and technological solutions for the business. For the summer, you will have the opportunity to tailor your work to align with your focus and interests while helping to drive change in the company. You will be involved in larger projects to give you the opportunity to work in a team environment where your thoughts are valued. You will also be paired up with other team members on individual projects where you will get exposed to root cause analysis methods and new tools and technology like Alteryx, different MS products, and languages like SQL and python.
Resource Scheduling and Coordination (Melville, NY)
The Resource Scheduling and Coordination team is responsible for creating and maintaining schedules for the Supervisors and Managers of our Field Operations teams (Field force). The team manages weekly reports to ensure that the right field technicians are assigned to the proper areas to complete assigned work. For the summer, you will be assisting the team in streamlining reporting for future automation of data and maintaining reports to stakeholders.
What You'll Need
- Availability to start on program start date, June 3, 2024 and work full-time (40 hours a week) throughout your duration of the summer
- Registered in school as a full-time student and continuing education full-time for Fall 2024 Semester
- Pursuing a Bachelor's, or Master's degree
- Majoring in Data Science, Data Analytics, Computer Science, Software Engineering, Engineering, or a related field
- Accumulated 18 or more credits and be 18 years of age
- Work authorization that does not now or in the future require sponsorship of a visa for employment authorization in the United States
- Located within a commutable distance to the identified work location for the summer
- Some Gridtern positions will require a valid US Driver's license. This qualification will be included in the department specific Gridtern role(s) descriptions at point of interview

Salary Range
$20.00 - $27.00 an hour (Undergraduate Student)
$28.00 - $34.00 an hour (Graduate Student)
Candidates will be assessed and provided offers based on major, degree type, and class year. Our Gridtern Program does not offer relocation, housing assistance, or public transportation reimbursement for Gridterns; however, we can provide a list of resources to utilize in making your arrangements.
