Summer Camp Lead Tech Instructor

POSITION

The Summer Camp Lead Instructor will lead the implementation of BGC’s Summer Programs curriculum, teaching 25-50 girls and gender-expansive youth in one of two streams listed below. You will collaborate closely with and be supported throughout by BGC staff and Summer Camp Teaching Assistants.

Students will be between 11-13 and 14-18 years old.

Instructors in our 2-week day camps will lead students through workshops at the intersection of gaming, generative AI, and climate. Here, campers will learn the basics of AI and take on the role of prompt engineers to create their own imaginative scenarios related to climate change. These scenarios will depict either utopian or dystopian futures, offering campers an opportunity to explore environmental issues creatively. Using their AI-generated images, campers will then develop their own Afrofuturist mini-game centered around a sustainability topic of their choosing. 

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Participate in teacher training prior to camp 
• Facilitate skills-building workshops using the assigned Black Girls Code curriculum 
• Participate in and assist with the implementation of student evaluations 
• Interact with youth and staff as a resource and facilitator
• Full attendance to all trainings, camp days and post-program debriefs

REQUIREMENTS

• Must be available to commit to the entirety of the programming–40 hours per week for 2 weeks consecutively.
• Teaching groups of middle and high school students in formal or informal settings
• Fluent in coding languages (Javascript or Python and knowledge of Scratch preferred) 
• Strong classroom management and relationship-building skills 
• Demonstrates ability to problem-solve
• Exceptional facilitation, communication, and presentation skills 
• Well-versed in restorative practices and conflict management 
• Enthusiasm and skill working in youth development 
• Integrity, maturity, credibility, and a demonstrated commitment to Black Girls Code’s mission 
• Demonstrates the ability to work in a fast-paced environment
• Dedicated to complete participation in 2 week or 3 day long summer program 
• Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work well in a team environment 

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE

• You must have experience in engineering, science, or technology to be considered for this role along with proven comfort interacting with middle and/or high schoolers. 




• As an instructor, you will be expected to create and maintain a strong camp culture and promote an inclusive and collaborative camp environment. You will thrive working in a fast-paced, high-performance environment and will demonstrate flexibility to last-minute modifications if they arise. 




• You will need to eagerly and quickly create relationships with campers, effectively facilitate lessons, and have direct experience teaching or coaching middle and/or high school students, with strong classroom management and community-building skills.
