Summary

The Summer Law Intern Program (SLIP) is the Department of Justice's competitive recruitment program for compensated summer internships. Conditions of Employment

- Completion of at least one semester of law school is required.

Qualifications
TECHNICAL QUALIFICATIONS:
Full or part-time law students who have completed at least one full semester of legal study by the application deadline. In addition, graduating law students who are entering a full-time judicial clerkship, graduate law program, or qualifying fellowship may intern following law school graduation subject to eligibility rules. Suitability: Entrance on duty is contingent upon completion of a suitability review and adjudication that includes a fingerprint check, credit check, drug test and a review of the summer candidates' pre-employment forms. Some components require a National Agency Check with Inquiries through the Office of Personnel Management.
Citizenship: U.S. citizens and qualifying non-U.S. citizens who meet immigration and appropriations law criteria may apply. The appointment of non-U.S. citizens is subject to strict security requirements and is extremely rare. Applicants who hold dual citizenship in the U.S. and another country will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Some positions are open only to U.S. citizens.
Locations: The Federal Bureau of Prisons will hire 3 interns for field offices located in major U.S. cities. The U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of South Carolina will hire for Columbia, Greenville, Florence, or Charleston. The Executive Office for Immigration Review, Office of the Chief Immigration Judge will hire for 15 Immigration Courts in cities nationwide. Salary: Federal salaries vary by geographic location. Employees assigned to high cost-of-living areas receive a percentage of their base pay as locality pay. See Legal Careers | Salary, Promotion & Benefits (justice.gov) .
