About The Position

The Supervising Engineer - Gas Planning is responsible for the direct supervision of gas planning engineering personnel and has oversight responsibility for ensuring Ameren Illinois has accurate, reliable gas network hydraulic models for transmission and high-pressure distribution pipelines. This position also oversees the development of policies, procedures, and methodologies for performing hydraulic network modelling and analyses in support of system operations, capital project scoping, emergency response scenarios, and new business requests.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Work closely with Supervising Engineers, Managers, and Directors to provide scoping options (e.g., route selection, pipe diameter, tap locations, etc.) for capital projects by ensuring the gas planning engineering personnel complete the necessary hydraulic system flow studies to optimize overall pipeline network performance under all potential operating scenarios.
  • Provide engineering leadership for all issues related to the creation and maintenance of gas system hydraulic flow models to ensure a high confidence factor in the results of the hydraulic flow network analyses that are conducted using these models. Responsibility includes developing standards and processes for analyzing system pressures and flows during normal operations and for maintenance, emergency, and peak demand scenarios.
  • Supervise the completion of advanced hydraulic analyses needed for decision support to attain optimal operational efficiency across the system.
  • Provide operational support, size main extensions and replacements for economy and performance and create long-term strategic plans, by working with other Ameren groups (e.g., Economic Development) that maximize the value of the existing gas network infrastructure and make recommendations for future improvements and investments.
  • Develop and maintain an extensive network of industry peer professionals involved in the gas planning process to ensure Ameren Illinois benefits from lessons-learned and best practices within the gas pipeline hydraulic flow modelling industry.
  • Provide direction and identify project assignments for gas planning engineering personnel. This includes oversight of the development of accurate time estimates to complete these assignments and ensuring personnel have the necessary tools, equipment, and training to complete the work.
  • Regularly engage with the leadership of Gas Supply, Gas Control, and Operations to coordinate work, develop standards, and comply with regulations. Responsibility includes developing standards and processes to unify Ameren Illinois gas planning practices across the Ameren Illinois service territory.
  • Provide support during the preparation of the Gas Technical Services Engineering construction, operations, and maintenance budgets and assist in preparation of the overall Gas Operations and Support budget. Provide direction for the identification and prioritization of capital expenditures and help evaluate and justify projects based upon engineering analyses, system capacity and any regulatory requirements.
  • Supervise the efforts of the gas planning engineers as they coordinate activities with gas engineers, construction and operations personnel, gas pipeline suppliers, and customers.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Engineering from an accredited University required. Professional Engineer (P.E.) License preferred. Five or more years of experience in gas planning engineering or equivalent (Pipeline, Process Piping, etc.) engineering experience required. Supervisory experience in gas planning engineering preferred. Five years of gas pipeline facilities design experience preferred. Specific experience with developing budgets, developing and implementing policies and procedures preferred.

In addition to the above qualifications, the successful candidate will demonstrate:

Additional Information

This position requires a strong working knowledge of Gas Supply, Gas Control, Gas Operations, the AIC Gas Operations and Maintenance Plan, gas facility construction standards, gas materials, operating policies, and network flow modeling software applications utilized for gas transmission and distribution planning engineering. Must possess good organizational, communication, and analytical skills. Must have demonstrated leadership behaviors with the ability to work collaboratively and flexibly across multiple organizations, solve problems decisively, and be proactive and self-motivated to identify improvement opportunities, establish priorities and meet deadlines.
