Summary

  • Within the Department of Defense (DoD), the appointment of retired military members within 180 days immediately following retirement date to a civilian position is subject to the provisions of 5 United States Code 3326.

  • You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.

Qualifications

Your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-12 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate most of the following: 1) Providing legal assistance services and limited scope representation to eligible persons; 2) Continuously mentoring, training and supervising legal personnel and non-attorney staff; 3) Conducting legal assistance and preventative law outreach activities; 4) Serving as a supervisory (within the rules of professional responsibility) attorney.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.


Upon selections the following documents will be requested:
  • Resume showing relevant experience and a cover letter that addresses the evaluation criteria of this position.
  • An official transcript of the applicant's law school record together with an official statement of his/her relative standing in his/her class. However, if the individual has been a member of the Bar for 5 years or more, the transcript requirement may be waived.
  • An official statement that his/her fitness to practice law or his/her conduct as an attorney have never been challenged. If either his/her fitness or conduct has been challenged, an official statement concerning the facts and circumstances together with any explanation that the applicant himself/herself may wish to submit.
  • Certificate of Good Standing issued within the past 3 months showing the applicant is a member in good standing of the Bar of the highest court of a State of the United States or a Territory of the United States or sufficient proof that the same has been requested with the appropriate licensing authority.
  • Writing sample of two pages or less. The writing sample may be an excerpt of a longer document but shall not exceed two pages in actual length.

The selectee is required to meet one or more of these employment conditions before the appointee will receive a tentative offer of employment. A tentative offer of employment will be rescinded if the selectee fails to report to any of the scheduled appointments, fails, the medical/agility/drug tests, lacks the certifications requirements, or is unable to obtain a Secret Security Clearance. Incumbents of drug testing designation positions will be subject to random testing. Drug test results will be provided to the employing activity/command.

Education


Must have a J.D. Degree from an ABA accredited law school, be a member in good standing of the bar and have legal experience in excess of 2 years commensurate with the duties and responsibilities of this position.

Additional information

This position is covered by the Department of Defense Priority Placement Program.

This position is eligible for part time, substantial or ad-hoc telework at the discretion of management.

This is an obligated position. The former incumbent has return rights to this position under PL 86-585.

This position is being filled by an alternative hiring process, is a temporary appointment (not to exceed 12 months), and is not in the competitive civil service.

This position is in the excepted service and does not confer competitive status or eligibility to be converted to a career or career-conditional appointment on the basis of temporary appointment.

Temporary appointments may be extended up to 3 years at the discretion of management and in accordance with applicable regulations.

Temporary actions taken under this announcement may be terminated at any time before the established not-to-exceed date.

Several vacancies may be filled.

A tentative offer of employment will be rescinded if the selectee fails to meet the pre-employment requirements, including failure to report to any of the scheduled appointments.
