This position is located in the Department of Homeland Security, United States Coast Guard, Office of the Judge Advocate General (CG-094), Office of Maritime and International Law (CG-LMI), Washington DC.

Qualifications

All Candidates must possess a J.D. or LL.B degree from an accredited law school;

AND

Must be a member in good standing of the appropriate licensing authority of any state, territory of the United States, Commonwealth of Puerto Rico or District of Columbia bar.

AND

To qualify for the GS-15 level position, must: have successfully completed at least one full year of professional legal experience as a practicing attorney equivalent to the GS-14 level in the Federal service as reflected in the nature and complexity of casework and legal issues for which responsible, the level of responsibility exercised, and the degree to which such experience equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities required to successfully perform the duties of this position. 

You must meet 3 out of the 6 specialized experience below: 

  • Providing legal advice and recommendations related to maritime operations and maritime governance; AND
  • Leading or managing a legal workgroup or team; AND
  • Providing operational legal training to an organization; AND
  • Conducting written and oral legal briefings; AND
  • Directing and executing plans, trainings, programs, policies, or projects in a professional or legal environment; AND
  • Conducting research and analyzes cases for legal sufficiency.

National Service Experience (i.e., volunteer experience): Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

This is a supervisory position, under provisions of the Civil Service Reform Act, first time supervisors and/or managers will be required to serve a one-year probationary period.
