Supply Chain Manager

At Science, our supply chain is long and complex. Every month we buy thousands of specialty products, and every year we make large investments that depend on materials and manufacturers from all over the world. While much of our buying is routine and easy, it is the edge cases that define our performance: lead times are determined by availability of a single critical part, and costs can vary wildly depending on market conditions.

The role of purchasing at Science involves gaining an in-depth understanding of our supply chain, often looking carefully at the products we buy and through our immediate vendors to the “critical components” that actually determine pricing and lead time. You will develop familiarity with the manufacturing processes of our vendor’s vendors to see supply chain disruptions and price changes coming before they happen, allowing us to be proactive and adapt ahead of time as needed.

Role responsibilities:

• Develop and maintain documentation on our key supply chains. Learn about the products we use and how we use them, how they are built, by who, where, and from what.
• Develop and maintain relationships with counterparts at key vendors.
• Track pricing information for a wide range of products we buy and/or are relevant for future buying. Work with both first-party vendors as well as refurbishers, auction houses, and other aftermarket entities to maintain a range of pricing and availability options.
• Collaborate with corporate finance to access commodities markets to use financial hedging instruments to protect materials pricing when appropriate.
• Collaborate with legal to develop standardized contracts for the family of activities around buying products and services from third parties.

Key qualifications:

• No specific prior experience with purchasing is required.
• Evidence of exceptional ability, demonstrated in whatever way may be relevant.
• Strong communication skills and a high level of overall aptitude for comprehending complex systems and distilling them to their essential fundamentals.
• High attention to detail; ability to track complex flows of money with exact accounting.

Salary/Pay Range:

For individuals hired to work in California, Science is required by law to include a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role.  We determine your level based on your interview performance and make an offer based on geo-located salary bands. The base salary range for this full-time position is $80,000- $120,000 + equity + benefits. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Please keep in mind that the equity portion of the offer is not included in these numbers.
