Sustainability Specialist

Job Summary:

The Sustainability Specialist works collaboratively with the Director of Sustainability to document and communicate Blue Diamond Growers' sustainability KPI's. They will support strategies by partnering with key internal resources, as well as works with internal and external partners to establish standard operating procedures and related mechanisms for documenting key sustainability activities, metrics, and accomplishments. They will work with the sales teams to engage customers in sustainability sales relationships, and communicate to internal and external stakeholders to drive engagement and advance company reputation.

The Specialist is expected to become a subject matter expert on climate smart and sustainable food/agriculture with significant potential for career advancement.

Job Description:

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

• Manages grant reporting relationship with USDA and related external partners to process Climate-Smart Commodities award, including documentation of activities and dollars spent.
• Works with team members and external partners to document, assemble, and update key data sets related to sustainability.
• Assists in establishing an auditable mass-balance data tracking system for sales associated with sustainability attributes.
• Assists Member Relations and Sustainability teams to collectrively reach Climate-Smart Commodities project objectives.
• Drives company sustainability program management with Director of Sustainability through identifying and tracking progress against annual program milestones.
• Executes and supports activities towards implementing the broader sustainability program goals and plans.
• Assists in the development of company sustainability reporting by:
  • Supporting internal and external communication partners with key data and narratives
  • Coordinating data collection for the formal annual sustainability report from internal teams and experts as needed
  • Collecting, writing, and editing narrative accounts to enhance and illustrate company sustainability storytelling beyond raw data
• Serves as member of sustainability related teams and committees as assigned by Director of Sustainability.
• Provides excellent customer service to internal and external customers. Works to accommodate requests for things such as training, projects, and other topics that arise.

MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS

• Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Science, Sustainability, Sustainable Agriculture, Environmental Studies or related fields
• 2 years of Corporate sustainability, or grant management experience
• Coursework or other training experiences in sustainability, environmental science, or related fields.
• Ability to effectively communicate with employees. Must possess strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Investigative and analytical skills required.
• Experience and ability to identify sustainability strengths and opportunities in current and future company activities.
• Proficiency in MS Office programs, Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Outlook.

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCES

• Master's Degree
• Experience managing and executing sustainability initiatives
• Experience with grant management
• Proficiency in sustainability or ESG reporting standards such as GRI (Global Reporting Initiative) or SASB (Sustainability Accounting Standards Board)

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Physically able to move throughout the facility, including climbing multiple flights of stairs. Able to sit/work at a desk for extended periods including typing, analysis, and focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Must be able to work in a plant environment or farm environment exposed to dust, high noise levels, extreme temperature and humidity fluctuations, and wet operating work conditions. Typical conditions may include prolonged sitting, standing, and walking, short periods of climbing, working at heights, or in confined spaces.
