SVP, Controller

 THE ROLE

Reporting to the Global Head of Finance, the SVP, Corporate Controller is a senior finance role with leadership over Sotheby’s global financial reporting department and deliverables.  This role will serve as a hands-on leader with strong technical accounting experience preparing GAAP financial statements in a public and/or private company, who proactively evolves the financial reporting and internal control functions while developing a team of seven and working in concert with the broader finance team. 

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Manage the preparation of US GAAP consolidated quarterly and annual financial statements, MD&A and supplemental information for the company  
• Oversee the external audit relationship and manage the annual audit process
• Responsible for the development of effective accounting systems and enterprise wide financial controls
• Provide decision making support and input to the business on the financial impact of transactions, based on the interpretation of accounting regulations and an understanding of the revenue and cost dynamics of the business 
• Ensure the integrity of the financial process and the accuracy of the financial statements and management performance reports
• Manage the financial close and financial report preparation under tight timelines and seek opportunities to further streamline processes to achieve faster filing deadlines
• Monitor debt levels and compliance with financial covenants
• Ensure global statutory reporting requirements are met globally
• Work with FP&A team to support the creation of the annual financial budget and forecasts
• Promotes a culture of high performance and continuous improvement that values learning and a commitment to quality output
• Mentors and develops staff using a supportive and collaborative approach, assigning accountability, setting clear objectives and adjusting to priorities as needed

IDEAL EXPERIENCE & COMPETENCIES

• Degree in Accounting and CPA required
• 15+ Years of progressive financial reporting experience
• 5+ years experience in a Controller position preferred
• Comprehensive knowledge and proficiency in US accounting rules (GAAP), IFRS experience a plus
• Experience leading audits and managing external audit relationships
• Demonstrated success building an effective control environment  
• Exceptional organization skills with an eye towards efficiency and process improvement
• Experience leading high-performing teams in a changing environment
• A strong executive presence, being comfortable interfacing with executive leadership and senior level business leaders
• Solid work ethic and willingness to own responsibilities
• Strong familiarity with financial reporting systems (SAP, Hyperion) and generally excellent computer skills
• Adaptable communication skills to articulate financial concepts to non-financial audiences
