Systems: Application Developer Lead

The D. E. Shaw group seeks an application developer to join its Systems group as a team lead. The Application Engineering team builds, deploys, customizes, integrates, and supports a variety of user productivity and developer infrastructure tools. We build custom infrastructure and applications, and use vendor tools when they’re the right fit. What you’ll do day-to-day

You will be responsible for various leadership roles within the Application Engineering team while also assuming direct responsibilities as an application developer. Some leadership aspects of the role will include assisting with mentorship, training, and professional development of team members, as well as collaboration with the team manager on operational and strategic leadership tasks. As an engineer on the team, you’ll be responsible for building, owning, and maintaining various applications and infrastructure pieces, and collaborating with firmwide business units and other groups in Systems to improve and enhance product offerings.

Who we’re looking for

• Five to seven years of relevant experience and a degree in computer science or related technical discipline are required.
• Previous experience working with a variety of programming languages and development environments and platforms is desired, as is an interest in developing software for both Linux and Windows environments across a variety of languages, including Python, JavaScript, Java, and Go.
• Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills are critical, as is a client-service mindset to build successful relationships within the department and across the firm.
• Prior experience as a team lead or mentor is highly desired. Prior management experience is beneficial but not required.
