Department Summary:
The mission of the Border Security department is to improve our impact on government operations in the areas of border security, law enforcement, and immigration as part of the MITRE Center for Securing the Homeland (CSH). Our current work program includes support in the areas of systems engineering, program acquisition and management, sensors and surveillance, communications and networking, digital engineering, and cybersecurity.
We are seeking a systems engineer with applied digital engineering (DE)/model-based engineering (MBE) experience to join our team of solution architects supporting an exciting variety of homeland security programs and providing advanced engineering, modeling and simulation (M&S), integration, and logistics capabilities to support homeland security missions. This opportunity is for those with experience applying systems engineering principles and practices across the systems engineering life cycle and leading teams using model-based languages, methods, and tools to analyze complex systems or systems-of-systems.
In this position, you will use your knowledge of systems engineering, technical leadership, and model-based engineering processes, methods, tools, and program roles across the life cycle to lead teams and help develop, implement, and deploy solutions and services across the enterprise. By applying model-based methods, systems engineers and architects promote mission success, functional integration, and resource optimization in support of decision-making for an enterprise environment.
Roles and Responsibilities:
You will learn, apply, provide technical leadership, and vision, and continuously improve current digital engineering practices to capture stakeholder and system requirements, facilitate discussion and understanding of digital environment, and enhance the digital engineering culture. You will lead teams and engage with other systems engineers directly supporting programs to foster a broader understanding of modeling needs and assist in developing engineering, integration, acquisition, and logistics digital work products. Some of the responsibilities include:
- Leading teams by providing systems thinking, critical design approaches, and end-to-end systems engineering for enterprise-level solutions and critical mission operations.
- Assisting government leaders in selecting, implementing, and adopting DE/MBE practices, governance, and tools.
- Developing systems engineering models that enable government leaders to make informed decisions about acquisitions, requirements, design, and execution of a program and/or system.
- Conducting analysis of current government implementations of DE/MBE efforts, identifying improvements in DE adoption, execution, and sustainment.
- Leading, mentoring, and coaching early career systems engineers and DE subject matter experts.
- Helping to identify good growth opportunities for MITRE as an FFRDC that will provide the significant outcomes / solutions the government needs in its rapidly changing environment.
- Monitoring, influencing, and shaping trends within the modern systems engineering discipline.
Minimum Qualifications:
- A minimum of 10 years of related experience with a Bachelor's degree; or 8 years and a Master's degree; or a PhD with 5 years' experience; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience.
- Successful candidate in this position will bring a record of application of systems engineering, model based engineering, and digital engineering methods and creative thought-leadership to mature and develop enterprise-level systems and revolutionary digital engineering solutions. The solutions will consist of process, tools, and people.
- Intermediate experience using enterprise modeling tools to model complex systems.
- Experience using modern MBSE tools (CATIA Magic, CATIA No Magic, DOORS, Rhapsody, Innoslate, etc.).
- Broad, in-depth systems engineering experience generating and reviewing key artifacts as a subject matter expert (SME) throughout the systems engineering life cycle (e.g., mission needs/operational requirements/concept of operations (MNS/ORD/CONOPS), system requirements, system architecture and design, etc.).
- Proven ability to lead work effectively and collaborate in a challenging, dynamic, fast paced environment.
- Expert organizational skills and the ability to independently execute tasks in a rapidly changing, fast-paced environment.
- Expert communication skills and experience, spanning a wide variety of colleagues, management professionals, and government customers including executive leadership.
- Exposure to multidisciplinary analysis and optimization tools and digital engineering lifecycle management tools.
- Must possess a Top-Secret clearance.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's degree or 8+ years of experience in systems engineering, software engineering, computer science, or related disciplines.
- Integration of MATLAB, Advanced Framework for Simulation, Integration, and Modeling (AFSIM), or other modeling tool outputs into MBE tools like CATIA Magic or CATIA No Magic.
- Experience analyzing requirements and system designs and using modern systems engineering toolchains (DOORS, JIRA, etc.).
- Strong knowledge and use of Systems Modeling Language (SysML), Unified Modeling Language (UML), and/or Unified Architecture Framework Profile (UAFP).
- Knowledge and use of CATIA Magic, CATIA No Magic, DOORS, Rhapsody, or Innoslate.
- Experience in the homeland security space.
