Systems Engineer III

POLITICO is seeking a Systems Engineer III with the dedication and drive to implement positive change. You will be responsible for supporting existing highly available infrastructure in a cloud-centric environment while recommending and implementing strategic initiatives and learning new technologies. In this position, you will work hand in hand with various teams across the Technology department including Development, Network Engineering, and Cybersecurity. You will be a subject matter expert for all things related to infrastructure automation and a mentor to junior team members. The ideal candidate can exercise independent judgment and decision making on complex issues and work under minimal supervision to determine the best course of action.

What you'll do

• Design and build infrastructure systems and architecture using (including but not limited to) Terraform, Helm, and Kubernetes
• Maintain and operate systems running on a variety of AWS services (EC2, EKS, RDS, etc.)
• Establish and enforce best practices around security, scalability, and reliability within both your team and software development teams
• Drive the implementation of various infrastructure projects related to department initiatives
• Architect fault-tolerant and low latency solutions for geographically dispersed users
• Maintain and evolve monitoring and notification systems
• Engage in the diagnosis and resolution of escalated critical incidents
• Create and sustain documentation on new services, procedures, and requirements
• Participate in an on-call schedule established by your manager and be immediately available while on-call to diagnose and resolve incidents
• Participate in security and compliance audits of systems infrastructure

What you'll need

• Demonstrated experience working with Terraform for 2+ years
• Experience operating and maintaining Kubernetes environments for 2+ years
• Extensive experience in architecting, implementing, and supporting solutions on AWS
• Linux system administration skills, 2+ years operations experience
• Experience with monitoring and metrics systems (i.e. Splunk, Datadog, Grafana)
• Practical experience with infrastructure automation tools (i.e. Terraform, Packer)
• Exceptional time and project management skills and an attention to detail
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills and robust analytical and problem-solving skills

Nice to have

• Bachelor's degree in a technical field (Computer Science, Engineering, etc.)
• Possession of an AWS Solutions Architect Certification
• Familiarity with content delivery networks
• Relational database management and performance tuning experience
• Windows Server administration experience

The anticipated salary range for candidates who will work in Arlington, VA is $125K-$150K per year. The final salary offered, which may be higher than the current anticipated salary range, to a successful candidate will be dependent on several factors that may include but are not limited to the type and years of experience within the job, type and years of experience within the industry, education, etc.
