We are seeking a Sr. Systems Engineer candidate to serve as a member of a KBR team working on the Hydrosphere, Biosphere and Geophysics (HBG) Support Services program at NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) in Greenbelt, MD. The engineer will be responsible for all systems engineering activities in support of the Ice, Cloud and land Elevation Satellite (ICESat-2) mission Science Investigator-led Processing System (SIPS). The Operations system/supported software consists of near real-time servers for automated data ingest, scheduling of science processing, data storage management, and data distribution written in object-oriented JAVA under J2SE. The software also includes GUI clients and command line tools. The engineer will perform other duties and assignments as required.

Specific work activities include the following:

• Manage the SIPS Operations in support of the ICESat-2 mission
• Ensure ingest and archival Level 0 data and associated Ancillary products
• Production and distribution of Level 1-3 Science Data products to the Project Science Office and the DAAC in a timely manner
• Support reprocessing of Science Data products upon delivery of new Science processing software or orbit file updates
• Debug and trouble shoot any problems that may occur during operations
• Install, test, and maintain operational code
• Will need to interface with customer and all entities that supply or receive data from the SIPS
• Familiar with the Ubuntu OS, writing shell scripts and PostgreSQL
• Develop software documentation artifacts per NASA requirements

Position Requirements:

• At least 5 to 10 years related experience in computer system engineering for multiple hardware platforms in a network environment
• At least 5 to 7 years of experience on UNIX and Linux systems
• At least 5 to 7 years of experience in data processing system design and management, and networking hardware, software, and protocols
• 5 years of experience in mass data storage technologies and data compression techniques
• 5 years of experience with computer system testing, integration, performance evaluation, and optimization procedures
• 5 years of experience incorporating new technologies into system engineering efforts

Additional Desirable Experience/Skills:

• Experience with the SDMS (Scheduling and Data Management System) or something similar
• Experience with Java Programming and socket programming in Java
• Experience with GUI application development with Java Swing
• Possibly 2 to 3 years of PostgreSQL experience
• Strong written and oral communications skills
• Critical thinking
• Good judgment and relationship management
• Ability to track detailed assignments and ensure timely delivery
• Ability to work independently, quickly, efficiently and accurately in a dynamic and fluid environment

Education:

• Degree - preferably M.S. degree or equivalent in Physical Science, Atmospheric Science, Mathematics or PhD in Earth Sciences, Computer Science, or a related field
