Job Description

ARA, an employee-owned applied science company, is seeking a senior-level systems engineer/modeler with experience in physiological systems. A successful candidate will work with a multidisciplinary team to develop models of baseline physiology and perturbation caused by injuries and illnesses including chemical/biological exposures, blast/radiation, penetrating wounds, toxic industrial chemicals, and combined exposures to multiple insults. Models will transition to virtual simulations, risk assessment platforms, virtual testbeds, triage/medical logistics tools, and other programs of national importance. As a senior position, there is an opportunity for rapid career growth along with strong benefits and flexibility to prioritize your work/life balance. We hope to hear from you!

An ideal candidate would have a strong systems engineering/modeling background (Ph.D. and 3+ years of relevant industry, non-academic, experience) with a focus on modeling human physiology in both normal and injured/diseased states and proven experience in applying those skills to physiological processes in a manner that can speak to both technical audiences and lay audiences. The team works to develop faster-than-real-time applications for modeling injury/illness presentations that can be detected via visual, auditory, infrared, and other sensing modalities. In addition to model development, the position will require support for the verification and validation of models, report writing and technical presentation, and collaborating in interagency working groups. The ideal candidate would be able to work closely with customers, peers, and younger employees from a diverse range of backgrounds. This candidate will be expected to transition into a technical leadership position at the company and will therefore require an individual who can plan technical tasks, delegate subtasks, lead junior staff, and ensure timely delivery of models, reports, and presentations. A successful candidate will work with a focused multidisciplinary team comprised of mathematicians, computational biologists, physicists, physiologists, and programmers. The ability to work with a team in a collaborative environment is crucial, and at least occasional in-person meetings and brainstorming sessions are required. This is a hybrid position with potential flexible office hours/days.

Our broad research portfolio includes the characterization of human health effects from chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and other hazards, retrospective and predictive risk assessments of hazardous agents, medical planning, and the development of scientific software. Most of our modeling and simulation work supports decision-makers across a spectrum of federal, state, and local agencies. ARA offers our staff members clearly defined technical and/or management growth tract opportunities that will allow you to help define the types of problems and projects that you like to work on. As you progress in your career at ARA, you will have the opportunity to follow your chosen track and progressively tackle more challenging tasks which will allow you to move into more senior positions with potential for your own projects, research, and customer relations.

What you'll do as a System Engineer - Physiological Modeler:

  • Provide leadership for a multidisciplinary team of scientists, mathematicians, and programmers on a wide range of challenging technical problems.
  • Lead the development and documentation of physiological systems models for a wide range of insult agents/phenomenon.
  • Provide input at technical project meetings and working groups with team members, partnering companies, and sponsoring agencies.
  • Contribute to the development of client- and public-facing materials such as white papers, quad charts, technical reports, presentations, and other technical material.

System Engineer - Physiological Modeler Position Requirements:

  • Applicants selected will be subject to a government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information; requirements include being a U.S. citizen.
  • Ph.D. in a relevant scientific field, e.g., Systems Engineering, Physiology, Systems Biology, Biomedical Engineering, or Mathematics. Developed or contributed to mathematical models of physiological processes, human health, medical treatment, or related areas.

  • Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated leadership and project management experience.
  • Demonstrated mastery of Python, C, C++, Java, Fortran, or similar scripting/programming languages.
  • Willingness to work in person multiple days/week in Arlington, VA, or Raleigh, NC (Fully remote is not an option for this opportunity).

System Engineer - Physiological Modeler Position Preferences:

  • Knowledge and experience in any of the following areas are considered a plus

    • Physiology, epidemiology, immunology, virology, toxicology, microbiology
    • Working in virtual/simulated environments
    • Digital twin development
    • Data analytics and visualization
    • Active DoD security clearance
