Job Description

Applied Research Associates, Inc. (ARA) has an exciting and challenging opportunity for a Systems Modeling & Simulation Engineer/Scientist who will support our growing business in modeling and simulation of complex systems. As a member of our diverse, multidisciplinary team, you will be responsible for developing theory-driven (e.g., engineering and physics-based) models and modeling methodologies, analytical algorithms, and software tools that strengthen our national security. The successful candidate will have demonstrated experience in designing and building mathematical, logical, computational, and other models and executing those models in simulation to study systems.

The systems modeling, analysis, and research team develops modeling and simulation tools to support the analysis of military systems, including weapons systems, communications systems, and other systems that support national defense. We develop models over a broad range of spatial and temporal scales using a variety of approaches to support diverse objectives. As a member of the team, you will apply your engineering, math, science, and/or software skills daily to develop creative solutions to challenging problems.

We are a research team, and the application and nature of our work can vary. You will be continuously challenged to learn and grow expertise in new areas. The most successful candidate will have a strong technical background in science, engineering, or mathematics and a desire to continue expanding their knowledge. Experience (and desire!) in writing robust and performant software is also highly desirable. If this describes you, please apply!

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Work closely with multidisciplinary science and engineering teams to develop innovative approaches in representing the structure and behavior of systems
  • Develop software from code (e.g., C++) to implement source system specifications
  • Contribute to the development of technical reports and other modes of communication of technical work
  • Occasionally work independently to learn about various classes of military systems to support model development

Systems Modeling & Simulation Engineer/Scientist Position Requirements:

  • Candidates selected may be subject to a government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information
  • A BS or higher in Computer Science, Engineering, or Mathematics along with 2-4 years of relevant experience
  • Demonstrated experience developing models and/or simulators in high-level programming languages (e.g., C++)
  • A strong interest in and ability to develop modeling and simulation software in high-level programming languages
  • Familiarity with systems science, systems theory, and/or theory of modeling and simulation
  • Familiarity with software architecture, algorithms, data structures, design patterns, API design, and/or test-driven development

Systems Modeling & Simulation Engineer/Scientist Position Preferred Qualifications:

Above all, we value passion, a continuous desire to learn, and teamwork. We are confident that if you possess the right attitude, work ethic, and skill set, you will succeed in the role. In addition to the experience and skills above, if you have any of the following, you will be able to accelerate your effectiveness and impact.

  • A graduate degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or Mathematics
  • MS or higher in Computer Science, Engineering or Mathematics
  • Familiarity with agile software development and/or other software development life cycle models
  • A desire to work in a dynamic team environment
  • Ability to communicate effectively through verbal and written mediums with technical and non-technical audiences
