Job Description
The N112 Special Projects Department works as trusted advisors with its government sponsors and mission partners as they architect system integration efforts to successfully incorporate new technologies and software applications in support of a resilient space enterprise infrastructure, sensing, and an integrated C2 system.
Additionally, N112 performs numerous sensing experiments and prototyping activities including a class-leading modeling, simulation, and analysis capabilities designed to enable MITRE and sponsor-driven analysis and research in all space mission domains across multiple customers, missions, and technology providers. The research, development, and outcomes of these efforts provide high-quality, comprehensive, quantitative insights for senior government decision makers shaping the future of our nation's Space policy, operations, and systems.
Roles and Responsibilities:
This position as Task Leader (TL) will lead a team of system, software and cybersecurity engineers while routinely interfacing with sponsors to design, develop, and advance solutions to field systems of critical importance to US Space Command. This task is part of a larger project focused on providing solutions to address space control Urgent Operational Needs; to develop comprehensive system-of-systems, working with Mission Partner organizations; to integrate those systems with Command and Control (C2) and space mission systems; and to provide sensing and domain awareness necessary to find, fix, track, target, engage, and assess.
The Los-Angeles based TL is the face of The MITRE Corporation as the person interfaces directly with the government sponsor. As MITRE's front-line leader, the TL assists the Sponsor to explore and develop solutions for their pressing challenges and mission needs. The TL works directly alongside the Sponsor, while thinking ahead of the current challenge; leverages the unique vantage point of MITRE to look across our programs and services; and leads the Sponsor in identifying the big problems that need solutions. The TL will oversee and guide a team to provide innovative solutions while continually seeking opportunities to shape the work program to enable MITRE to provide the most significant impact for the Sponsor.
- Develop a trusted advisor relationship with the Space Warfighting Acquisitions Delta Senior Material Leader, Deputy, subordinate Material Leaders and their staffs
- Engage the Sponsor and your team to understand and shape the work program in alignment with MITRE's Space Warfighting strategy to deliver mission impact against problems that matter.
- Build and develop a team with a broad range of engineering skills to reduce risk and increase effectiveness across the lifecycle of a family of programs
- Lead a team to develop and deliver high-quality technical products
- Maintain accurate staff plans and allocate MITRE employees with the appropriate skills and expertise, while partnering with staff to develop future skills in anticipation of evolving sponsor needs
- Ensure project risks and challenges are raised to appropriate leaders within MITRE and the government and develop mitigation measures
- Leverage bodies of knowledge across MITRE to ensure leading practices and lessons learned are incorporated within the project execution
- Provide systems engineering expertise including concept development, requirements definition, system performance analysis, and investigation into technologies and concepts for system improvement
- Ensure team members share ideas, experiences, knowledge, and lessons learned so that MITRE's unique vantage point is brought forward
Minimum Qualifications:
- Requires a minimum of 10 years of related experience with a bachelor's degree; or 8 years and a Master's degree; or a PhD with 5 years' experience; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience
- An active Top Secret security clearance with the ability to obtain higher level clearances
- Strong technical skills and capability with an interest towards pushing the state of art into the state of practice
- Previous experience developing task objectives and building a team to achieve those objectives
- Demonstrated leadership and collaboration across diverse and multi-disciplinary teams
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Ability to work with sponsors and stakeholders to achieve consensus
- Ability to clearly identify and communicate key information
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Interest or experience in multi-disciplinary complex problem solving
- Demonstrated commitment to continuous learning, innovation, and engineering excellence
Preferred Qualifications:
- Demonstrated thought leadership and ability to shape and grow the work program
- Experience working with the Missile Defense Agency and an understanding of the BMDS architecture
- Ability to employ rapid prototyping and/or modeling and simulation to develop and validate technical recommendations that inform sponsor and partner capability requirements and decisions
- Experience and familiarity in one or more mission areas:
- Command and Control of Space Systems
- Joint Operations
- Cybersecurity
- Experience in one or more of the following technical domain areas:
- Tactical data communications (e.g., Link 16)
- Mission Engineering and Model-Based Engineering
- Virtualization and cloud architectures
- Enterprise software development and agile techniques
- Astrodynamics
- Experience and familiarity with U.S. government and Department of Defense (DoD) practices, tools, and projects related to:
- Requirements Development
- Lifecycle Acquisitions
- Rapid experimentation and fielding
- Familiarity with US Space Force operations and national space strategy
- Ability to professionally represent MITRE
- Advanced degree in systems engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, astronautical engineering or a related field

Salary compensation range and midpoint:
$151,000 - $188,500 - $226,000 Annual
