Job Description
Are you skilled in managing tax exposure, filings, exemptions, and answering questions about tax and tax relationships? Are you responsible and knowledgeable?
As a tax manager, you will bring the entire indirect tax compliance function and property tax reporting in-house, in addition to owning tax relationships and all tax-related things. While no person is an expert in all areas of tax, you will be the point of contact for tax questions.
Success in the Role: What are performance outcomes over the first 6-12 months you will work toward completing?In the first 30 days, you will:
- Assess the timing of property tax filings and begin filing on behalf of the company
- Review our existing sales tax status, where are we registered, and ensure we are pulling data accurately
- Learn the Tax Exemption Certificate process
Within 3 months, you will:
- Understand our sales tax landscape and advise on proper sales tax reporting
- Add Tax Exemption Certificates in timely and assign them correctly
- Meet with our tax providers to develop a rapport and a relationship
- Assess NEXUS for states we are not registered and advise whether we need to register
By the end of the first year, you will:
- Have all property tax filings fully in house
- Bring Sales Tax filings in house
- Reduce external tax fees
- Develop a process that would identify how we can invoice our customers for property tax.
- Have a regular review of NEXUS exposure
- Resolve the existing sales tax liability
- Manage the entire tax relationship, including supporting Federal and State tax returns, and any other required filings, and get answer tax questions.
- Reconcile sales tax accounts each month to be able easily to understand what is due by the state
Sales Tax Expertise
- In 3 months, bring sales tax filings in-house and file timely, review our existing products and advise on sales tax coding for proper customer assessment.
- Upload tax exemption certificates promptly
- In 6-9 months, reduce existing sales liability and manage NEXUS.
- Track tax exemption certificates, following up for renewals from customers to ensure they remain valid
- In 1 year, resolve sales tax liability, make sure we are comfortable in our NEXUS status, and charge and file sales tax accurately and timely.
Financial Acumen
- Understand the financial data needed for reporting and where it comes from, and understand the source data.
- In 3 Months, understand our systems and underlying data
- In 6 Months, be able to run all needed data on your own and complete filings with little oversight.
- Be self-sufficient in pulling data and be knowledgeable enough about what the data means.
Team Engagement
- Be aligned with the team and openly communicate.
- Fit with the team is especially important as we are a solid group that supports each other. We will know this is met by meeting deadlines with month-end closes and other schedules.
- Pitch in for ad hoc projects and be willing to assist cross-functionally
- In 1-3 months, participate in monthly close meetings
- In 3-6 months, provide updates for tax status and ensure all tax close-related processes are completed timely
- In 3-6 months, take over tax relationships and be the team person for tax questions, which includes reaching out to external advisors for resolution if required
Reporting
- The key responsibility of this role is reporting various types of taxes with governments, state, local, and occasionally federal.
- In 1-3 months, get an assessment of property taxes required to be filed. File any that are necessary in that time, with assistance as needed.
- In 3-6 months, be fully responsible for all property tax filings and property tax accruals as needed.
- In 3-6 months, be the primary contact for all tax-related processes, including federal and state tax filings.

- You will be joining the accounting team and report to the Assistant Controller.
