The Role
The Tax Manager will assist with Sales and Use tax, as well as compliance and overseeing daily tax operations. This person will be tasked with communicating any compliance issues as well as identifying potential solutions and operation improvements within the department. The role will be central to the Tax function within Sotheby's and integral for global operations. This role report directly into the VP, Sales and Use Tax.
Responsibilities
- Support third party service providers on Monthly Sales & Use tax Compliance
- Review monthly/quarterly/annual tax compliance
- Ensure all sales transactions are captured correctly on the returns and taxes are calculated accurately
- Validate and upload compliance data on monthly basis or as needed
- Ensure accurate and timely processing and filing of monthly/quarterly/annual of tax payments and associated returns
- Prepare detailed supporting documents and work papers for filings, maintain current records of customer exemption certificates
- Ensure monthly tax rates updated in Vertex, keep current with respect to changes in sales and use tax laws and tax rates
- Act as the primary sales and use tax contact to address tax issues on customer invoices and vendor invoices.
- Prepare monthly account reconciliation for sales tax payable account, responsible for reconciliation of sales & use tax accrual accounts to tax returns and payments to support the accruals for each state.
- Work with AR, AP, and IT to resolve any billing discrepancies.
- Be the go-to person for all sales and use tax questions. Build up expertise and share that knowledge cross-functionally.
- Assist with sales & use tax, property tax audits and notices. Prepare documents and analysis for the sales tax auditors in various jurisdictions.
- Knowledge of multistate resale certificate rules and work with external customers to proactively maintain a current repository of resale certificates.
- Willing to learn and engage in State Income Tax, Property tax, Business License, Annual reports and Unclaimed Property matters, including projects, compliance and audit defense.
- An ability to work cross functionally with finance and other departments to support the accounting close process, advising on tax accounting and indirect tax matters as new developments arise.
- Knowledge of sales tax exemption rules, maintain a repository of sales tax exemption certificate and report refunds of sales tax.
- Assist with any special projects as directed
Qualifications
- B.S. degree in Taxation, or related field is preferred, CPA or CMI preferred
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (verbal & written) in dealing effectively with internal and external customers
- Strong Excel skills and MS Office proficiency
- Technical sales & use tax knowledge with experience in multi-jurisdictional tax environment
- Prior experience in preparing multi-state sales and use tax returns using Vertex is preferred
- Experience with SAP is a plus
- Strong attention to detail and outstanding organization skills
- Independent management of assignments in a dynamic fast-paced environment
The proposed base salary for this position ranges from $95,000-$140,000. In addition to base salary successful candidates are eligible to receive a discretionary bonus, as well as a competitive benefits package. Salary offers are based on a wide range of factors including relevant skills, training, experience, education, and, where applicable, licensure or certifications obtained. Market and organizational factors are also considered.
