Tax Specialist @ SpotHero: 

The Tax Specialist will manage SpotHero’s internal processes and tools relating to state and local tax compliance, serving as the tax point of contact for internal teams and external partners.


The ideal candidate is a strong operational leader with excellent communication and organizational skills. You enjoy working across teams and operating with a high-level of autonomy in a fast-paced environment. This person enjoys process creation and improvement, establishing best practices and being responsive and practical in a growing organization. 



What you will do:

  • Develop, contribute to and own the internal processes and tools used to implement and manage state and local tax collection and remittance, as applicable.
  • Provide expert tax solutions for business plans, and translate complex tax ideas into clear action points
  • Work seamlessly with Product, Engineering, Legal & Compliance, and Finance teams and cross-functional partners on existing and future tax-related processes
  • Analyze business models and identify areas involving tax considerations
  • Collaborate with in-house Legal & Compliance team and coordinate external resources to develop actionable tax solutions for new e-commerce products, features and operational events launched in US
  • Support business teams to understand and comply with tax compliance requirements through trainings
  • Take and respond to tax queries from internal teams and external partners as Tax Point of Contact, with support from Finance and Legal & Compliance team members.
  • Periodically review existing tax solutions and identify opportunities for improvement
  • Monitor changes and updates of tax legislation, identify the potential impact on business operations, and prepare teams for the challenge in advance.
  • Payroll tax research [US required and Canada a plus]
  • Franchise tax filings
  • Work with outside tax and audit professionals 
  • Research and propose resolution to technical tax matters
  • Handles all parking tax questions for Finance, proactively researches and backs up positions with research and documentation, leads tax calculations, and tracks changes, etc
  • Partners closely with Legal on all tax questions – helps with written needs like T&Cs, Operator communications, tax audit requests, etc
  • All other taxes – main liaison with outside accounting team on Federal and State taxes, Canadian annual filings, 174, R&D, etc
    • Keeps on top of tax filings, reviews and questions outside accounting team’s work, handles R&D time study internally (vs. outsourcing)
    • Maintains tax balance sheet and any other key docs needed
  • Manages tax footnotes for audited financials, tax provision work, memo writing

What you have: 

  • Extensive knowledge of accounting methods, company tax best practices, and state and local tax audit procedures
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Tax research experience 
  • Sharp attention to detail
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, an ability to communicate effectively with many members of several different internal teams, as well as external partners
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance
  • 5-7+ years US tax experience, including in-house experience
  • Past experience with tax collection calculation and remittance implementation
  • Minimal travel
