About the role:
To assume responsibility for overseeing site operations to ensure efficient and professional performance, all while meeting all targets and exceeding customer expectations. As a Team Manager, you will be at the helm of daily spoke operations, encompassing site safety and service quality, as well as achieving operational targets within the agreed-upon budget and timeframe. You will also collaborate with various business streams to reduce employee churn and enhance retention rates.

This position reports to the Operations Manager and, you may be called upon to deputise in their absence. Additionally, you will be responsible for taking charge of various aspects of employee management such as probationary periods, absence management, and performance management. Your primary mission is to lead and oversee a dynamic, motivated, and value-driven Delivery Operations Team, operating across diverse shift patterns to deliver an exceptional customer experience while maintaining the highest levels of efficiency, safety, and environmental responsibility in our delivery service.

This position entails a 40-hour workweek, with flexible 10-hour shifts on a rotating schedule of any four days out of seven, which may include some weekend shifts.

You will be:
As a Team Manager, you'll play a pivotal role in ensuring the safety, well-being, and performance of our Delivery Operation team. You will be responsible for leading and inspiring a team to deliver exceptional results in line with Ocado's values and operational guidelines. This role requires a strong focus on people management, shift management, facilities and vehicle management, as well as health and safety oversight. In the realm of people management, you'll be responsible for managing the delivery operation team, including recruitment, performance management, and training. Your ability to engage and motivate the team will be crucial in promoting a positive working culture and ensuring excellence within the Delivery Operation team. You will provide constructive feedback, support recruitment efforts, and minimise employee churn while ensuring compliance with training and procedural requirements. Additionally, collaborating with support functions such as Training, Recruitment, and Engagement will be essential to leveraging expertise and supporting our teams effectively.

In this role, you will ensure the smooth operation of our site during shifts exceeding customer expectations and administer all related paperwork. You will act as the first point of contact for the team, offering support, solving problems, and communicating relevant changes. Proactively identifying and addressing issues, liaising with the Planning Department to ensure adequate resources, overseeing the marshaling team and reviewing KPIs for continuous improvement will be key aspects of your role.

Furthermore, this role will also involve overseeing the maintenance of site facilities, vehicles, and assets in line with company policies and legislative requirements. From managing vehicle incidents to proactively maintaining facilities, you will ensure a safe and well-maintained environment. This includes managing the fleet efficiently, maintaining site facilities and assets, collaborating with relevant support teams, managing visitors and contractors, and facilitating the introduction of new vehicles and equipment will be part of your responsibilities.

Lastly, safety is paramount, and as the Team Manager, you'll be responsible for implementing Health and Safety policies across the site This involves conducting regular site inspections, identifying hazards, assessing risks, and establishing control measures to minimise loss or injury. Training employees, ensuring emergency procedures are understood, and investigating accidents/incidents will be vital in maintaining a safe working. Minimum:

  • ​Knowledge of best practice Health & Safety & Safe Systems of Working
  • Good numerical skills, able to read & understand numerical data. Ability to set and work within a target/KPI driven framework
  • Previous experience in inventory management and stock control
  • Strong communication skills  - verbal and written with the ability to interact positively at all levels
  • PC literate (Excel, Google Operating Systems), Microsoft user – basic level
  • Self-motivation

  • Adaptability and ability to work under pressure

Preferred (in addition to minimum)

  • Food Safety Standards - Knowledge of key elements of food safety standards.
  • Experience of working in a 24/7 productivity conscious warehouse environment.
  • Warehouse Management Systems - Working knowledge of key elements/core operation reporting tools.
  • Team Management Skills - Some previous people management experience (e.g. supervisory, secondments / step-up)
