Overview of the role:

We have an exciting new role in our Sports Technology team for a Tech Lead. You will lead, coordinate and mentor a squad of software engineers, whilst being accountable for the design, implementation and operation of our products and platforms.

You will be a highly motivated and experienced software engineer who is passionate about writing good code. Working with our engineering managers in developing staff and evolving the team through mentoring our engineers with your areas of expertise. You can expect to be a person that makes key technical decisions and leads with best practice.

You’ll be reporting into an Engineering Manager in a team who all share a passion for our products and understanding of our customers behaviour.

This role follows a hybrid approach to working, allowing you to combine working from home with working in our modern offices. These discussions are between you and your manager to find the best pattern for you both, while recognising that quality time together is essential for keeping us mission-aligned.

What you’ll do:

• Lead by example, being a point of contact for technical knowledge in the team.

• Ability to coordinate teams of developers to execute on plans in a timely fashion.

• Enthusiastic to act as a mentor and lead to other developers of less experience.

• Define and analyse business requirements and implement solutions to business needs, ensuring their completion by putting together a robust end to end process.

• Help maintain our existing systems, develop new system applications and improve functionality to ensure high quality in any software releases.

• Be an expert in technologies that drive internet giants like Twitter and Netflix.

• Collaborate with other engineers and architects to help develop highly scalable distributed systems that handle a high volume of financial and gaming transactions in a high load environment.

• Participate in open discussions about architecting solutions to satisfy the business and technical requirement.

• Show passion to work in a team and as a team to tackle problems but without requiring micromanagement.

• Eager to learn new, cutting-edge technologies and techniques (we provide a dedicated Learning and development time for that purpose).

• Establish meaningful and effective relationships within and outside your area such that our team and organisational goals can be achieved.

What you’ll bring:

• Experience as a people leader and technical expert, someone who can advise and support their team and stakeholders on technical matters.

• Experience in the development of modern large backend products, hosted in the cloud (AWS), delivered at scale and running 24/7.

• Solid understanding of object oriented and functional programming, preferably having a significant knowledge in Java (including streams and lambdas) and/or other JVM languages.

• Expertise with SQL and writing performant complex queries and architecting data solutions in high concurrency environments will be a great advantage.

• Understanding of messaging, REST and Web Socket based infrastructures, including HTTP 2.0 is also a plus.

• You will be self-motivated and willing to contribute at all levels, listening and learning from those around you.

• Our engineers work closely with colleagues in all positions, so communication and interpersonal skills are important for this role.

• Modern software engineering relies on iterative, incremental development and fast feedback. As such we expect a good understanding of the mechanics of this including a solid understanding of automation and its role in modern software delivery.

• Have experience of working in a modern agile environment (e.g. Scrum / Kanban).

• You will be comfortable working independently or collaboratively with good time and prioritisation skills.
