Tech Lead - Perception, Scene Understanding

The company’s core technology is the Nuro Driver, an integrated autonomous driving system consisting of state-of-the-art, AI-first software and custom-built sense and compute hardware. The first commercial application of the Nuro Driver is autonomous goods delivery with our custom, electric, zero-occupant vehicles in partnership with some of the most recognized brands in the world including Uber and FedEx.

About the Role
The Perception Scene Understanding team is seeking a senior level engineer to provide technical leadership to tackle an array of perception challenges in order to put the autonomous vehicles on the road. This group covers a wide range of responsibilities — detecting rare events on the road using all available sensor modalities, understanding human intent, recognizing traffic signals at extremely high accuracy, rain intensity estimation, to name a few. All these projects require sufficient fluency with modern deep learning techniques, the capability of solving problems for which there are no off-the-shelf solutions, and an affinity to working on these off-the-beaten-path problems.

About the Work

• You will have the opportunity to take on a number of novel problems, claim full ownership, and just go deep on it.
• You will work closely with stakeholders in other teams to define project requirements and metrics.
• You will be involved in all stages of problem solving, including initial proof of concept, model iteration, onboard deployment, and on-road performance monitoring.
• You will also be responsible for communicating the progress to stakeholders, so that they have a clear understanding of the strategy, the risks, and the trajectory of progression.

About You

• Experience in applying ML techniques to solving robotics problems in a production environment.
• Sufficient fluency with both Python and C++.
• Experience in at least one of the popular machine learning frameworks, such as TensorFlow or PyTorch.
• Bonus: Track record in solving problems for which data acquisition is challenging, and useful metrics are hard to define.

At Nuro, your base pay is one part of your total compensation package. For this position, the reasonably expected base pay range is between $202,350 and $303,050 for the level at which this job has been scoped. Your base pay will depend on several factors, including your experience, qualifications, education, location, and skills. In the event that you are considered for a different level, a higher or lower pay range would apply. This position is also eligible for an annual performance bonus, equity, and a competitive benefits package.
