This role offers a unique opportunity to lead the engineering vision for a mobile-first, free-to-play live service game, combining hands-on technical leadership with strategic oversight. The Technical Director will be responsible for defining the game’s architecture, ensuring code quality, and building scalable systems that support long-term live operations. You will mentor and grow a high-performing engineering team, foster a culture of ownership and collaboration, and collaborate closely with cross-functional partners including Product, Design, Art, Data, and QA. This position is ideal for someone who thrives in fast-paced, innovative environments and is passionate about shipping commercially successful games while maintaining technical excellence. Accountabilities:
- Lead, mentor, and develop the engineering team, fostering a culture of accountability, autonomy, and excellence.
- Define and own the technical architecture and strategy, balancing immediate feature delivery with long-term scalability and maintainability.
- Champion engineering workflows that enable rapid iteration, reliable deployment, and smooth live service operations.
- Collaborate proactively across Product, Design, Art, Data, and QA to remove blockers and deliver innovative solutions.
- Establish and maintain best practices for code quality, mobile performance, observability, and documentation.
- Leverage shared technology platforms effectively while contributing feedback to improve studio-wide systems.
- Manage engineering resource allocation, balancing feature delivery, technical debt, and live operations sustainably.
- Represent engineering in leadership discussions, translating technical strategy to non-technical stakeholders and influencing decisions.
- Proven experience as a Technical Director or equivalent, shipping and operating mobile free-to-play or live service games.
- Strong technical expertise in Unity and mobile game development, with experience in architectural decision-making and code review.
- Track record of building and leading high-performing engineering teams in fast-paced, ambiguous environments.
- Ability to translate technical concepts for non-technical stakeholders and align engineering with business goals.
- Deep understanding of free-to-play game mechanics, monetization, live operations, and data-driven iteration.
- Strong problem-solving skills, creativity, and a first-principles approach to technical challenges.
- Clear, direct communication style with the ability to build trust across distributed, remote-first teams.
