Technical Manager - Automation

In this role, you will oversee projects within the Marine Service and Digital, Process Automation Marine & Ports (PAMP), providing clear guidelines, tasks and milestones, while motivating and providing feedback. You will be responsible to develop technical solutions and financial figures for for energy efficiency improvement and modernization projects for electrical and automation systems in all vessel segments. Act as a Product Manager to provide Automation maintenance and modernization solutions to sales to manage life cycle of ABB products delivered to ships over several years. Support Project Managers and Lead Engineers to produce project engineering, documentation, review service reports and solve technical problems. Occasionally participate to project execution on sites anywhere in the world, to ensure high quality of project delivery and testing. Provide sales and technical support on multiple projects of moderate size or portions of major projects, cost effectively and in accordance with contract specifications, quality standards and safety requirements.

Your responsibilities
- Technical contribution: Ensures that engineering is developed with complete information. Optimizes designs to meet updated standards, incorporating new products, components and functionalities. Reviews engineering drawings, specifications and plans required by manufacturing, fabrication or construction. Evaluates, selects and proposes standard techniques, procedures and criteria to perform tasks for projects with moderately complex features
- Serves as a specialist in application of advanced concepts and methods
- Provides technical support for testing, installation, commissioning and start up activities, clarifying potential issues or providing solutions to correct engineering errors
- Sales support: Prepare technical proposals, cost models and presentations for projects (provision of bills of materials, estimated engineering hours, etc)
- Contract management: Supports Contract Managers in issuing claims (new/change in scope of work, cost impact, time impact, risk quantifications etc.). Provides cost effective quality solutions as per customer requirement and supports deliveries within budget and contract. Ensures adherence to safety standards and mitigation of potential risks
- Planning and control: Creates work plans, defines project tasks and cost estimates in one's area of responsibility. Reviews and approves scope, budget and schedule for assignments and plans deliverables on time and within targeted cost. Improves effectiveness of work plan in collaboration with other functions
- Risk and opportunity management: Completes risk and opportunity assessments and ensures implementation of resulting actions in one's area of responsibility. Reports any contract / quality / program / cost issues to management along with recommendations for resolution
- Customer: Works with customers, contractors and others to shape and develop solutions, seeking feedback and innovating to deliver improvements. Attends project meetings and supports in all technical aspects of project assignments
- Supply chain management: Collaborates with the Supply Chain function to ensure that technical requirements for equipment or services are communicated and agreed to with potential suppliers. Provides technical evaluation of supplier proposals and accepts as fit for purpose supplied equipment or services
- Technical leadership and knowledge sharing: Shares knowledge, best practices and experience across own business unit and beyond. Attends project meetings and presents specific aspects of project design assignments
- Processes and tools: Develops, selects and applies standard techniques, procedures and tools. Ensures that activities comply with required safety regulations and contractual requirements. Reports processes and tools inefficiencies and suggests ideas for improvements
- People leadership and development: Coaches, provides support and technical advice to colleagues
- Other job duties include: Providing recommendations and assisting organizations with upgrading their electrical systems and/or automation systems
- Integration of energy storage systems into projects
- Preparing cost estimates and bid proposals
- Overseeing the quality aspects and technical support for electrical engineering projects for shore power systems
- Creating or supporting the project team during the development of project plans
- Supporting start up, troubleshooting and commissioning activities
Your background
- Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Automation engineering or related field and minimum 8 years of applicable experience preferred, with on site experience, in an automation systems on ships and overall knowledge of ABB products and systems used in ships
- In particular have experience of the key components like MV (Medium Voltage) and LV (Low Voltage) switchboards, protection relays, Advant and 800xA systems and other components used in ships
- Service mind set, solution orientation, good international communication skills, ability to use own initiative and good collaboration with other people are required to succeed in this job
- Looking for a broad range of expertise on automation systems in ships to support projects in sales and delivery of modernizations of automation systems, upgrading and repairing and adding new features to existing systems in ships in all vessel segments, including: power and energy storage systems; control systems; Installation and commissioning
