Job Description

About Us

At HDR, we specialize in engineering, architecture, environmental and construction services. While we are most well-known for adding beauty and structure to communities through high-performance buildings and smart infrastructure, we provide much more than that. We create an unshakable foundation for progress because our multidisciplinary teams also include scientists, economists, builders, analysts and artists. That's why we believe diversity is our greatest strength. HDR is proud to be an equal opportunity workplace and an affirmative action employer.

We believe that the way we work can add meaning and value to the world. That ideas inspire positive change. That coloring outside the lines can illuminate fresh perspectives. And that small details yield important realizations. Above all, we believe that collaboration is the best way forward.

Primary Responsibilities

You will be a technical writer and a backup editor to our main technical editor in Salt Lake City. Your responsibilities will consist of writing, editing, and formatting technical documents (mainly environmental analyses and engineering reports, grant applications, and potentially some proposals). You'll edit for spelling, punctuation, and grammar plus style, flow, clarity, conciseness, organization, voice, and user focus. You'll format documents in Microsoft Word according to an existing template.

The required grant writing skills include research, preparing compelling and persuasive arguments for grant criteria, summarizing key points in tables or graphics, coordinating with HDR experts and client staff, reviewing applications for accuracy, and meeting deadlines.

A key to success in the editor position is being willing to (politely) interrogate an author's assumptions or logic if needed. Ideally you have an analytical mindset and can suggest ways to make a document better, not just correct.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Edit technical documents (mainly environmental analyses and engineering reports; potentially some proposals)
  • Assist with writing federal grants
  • Assist project managers and other technical staff with producing environmental reports
  • Format technical documents in Microsoft Word according to an existing template
  • Coordinate with authors to resolve edits

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in English, writing, technical communication, or related field
  • A minimum 3 years of recent relevant working experience, preferably for a firm in the A/E/C consulting industry
  • Excellent writing skills
  • Excellent editing skills (spelling, punctuation, and grammar plus style, flow, clarity, conciseness, organization, voice, and user focus)
  • Ability to manage multiple documents and deadlines
  • Ability to follow different style guides for different projects
  • Ability to edit documents to have a human, grounded voice (not academic or "corporate")
  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Word
  • Ability to format documents in Microsoft Word according to an existing template

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with NEPA environmental documents
  • Experience with federal grant applications
  • Experience with Adobe InDesign
