Technical Writing Director
Job Description
Materialize is the streaming SQL database company that makes it easy for any developer or analyst to understand streaming data, answer complex questions and build intelligent applications using standard technology. Whether it’s delivering personalized experiences, accurately identifying fraud, building predictive AI, or discovering new business opportunities, the ability to run complex queries on multiple streams of data and keep their answers up to date is critical to making better decisions about the changing world around us.
We are focused on bottom-up developer adoption, our core software is free to use and source available, our business model is a cloud product that handles management of Materialize and lets businesses focus on building value. We have a vibrant developer community on Slack and as much as possible we work in public on GitHub.
The Materialize team includes engineers who were early employees of Cockroach Labs, Ververica, and Stripe. Our work builds on top of Timely Dataflow and Differential Dataflow, both created by our co-founder Frank McSherry, a world-leading computer scientist with decades of award-winning research in all aspects of data.
Kleiner Perkins, Redpoint Ventures and Lightspeed Venture Partners.
You have experience writing docs for data-oriented tools, or abundant writing experience and a deep interest in infrastructure (database, deployment tools, etc.). In previous roles, you’ve not only shipped documentation that helped users adopt the product, but shaped how documentation worked. You’ve had experience working with engineering teams, and have moved into leadership roles or are ready to.
At Materialize, you will lead efforts to create industry-leading documentation for our first-of-its kind streaming SQL engine. Your and your team’s documentation will help users understand what Materialize is, how it compares to existing technologies, and how to use it to enable real-time analytics over streaming data.
Beyond writing and managing documentation, you will have the opportunity to build documentation as a first-class product at Materialize. The platform you develop can serve crucial business goals, such as improving our cloud product’s functionality and providing important data about users’ adoption of features.
ExpectationsIn your first 30 days, you will be hands-on learning about Materialize––writing new and improving existing documentation by interfacing with product and engineering teams. This will help you create a better understanding of Materialize the product and begin understanding the shape of your team’s efforts.
In your first 60 days, you will have begun shaping ideas around what you’d like your team to accomplish, and how you’ll measure their impact.
In your first 90 days, you’ll:
- Have a roadmap for at least one long-term, high-impact initiative.
- Set up a process to identify and prioritize your team’s work.
- Begin building out your team of content producers.
- The opportunity to take the lead on key strategic objectives of Materialize and to exercise outsize impact on the overall direction of the organization
- Competitive compensation including a commensurate Stock Option Package
- Medical coverage, including Dental and Vision (or equivalent for non-US residents)
- A generous tech-budget to get you all the latest hardware and software that you need
We believe that the right person would have the following:
- 5+ years of technical writing experience
- Experience in structuring a writing practice by maintaining the process and supporting tools, along with coaching other Technical Writers
- Context about working with developer tools in the data space: e.g. databases, message brokers, ETL tools, data warehouses, general SQL, or other data products.
- Good understanding and experience working with GitHub for collaboration (pull requests and reviews)
We understand it takes a diverse team of highly intelligent, passionate, curious, and creative people to develop the exceptional product we are building. Our dynamic team has incredible perspectives to share, just as we know you do, and we take great pride in being an equal opportunity employer.
