Kairos Power is a new nuclear energy technology and engineering company whose mission is to enable the world’s transition to clean energy, with the ultimate goal to dramatically improve people’s quality of life while protecting the environment. This goal will be accomplished through the commercialization of the fluoride-salt-cooled, high-temperature reactor (FHR) that can be deployed with robust safety, affordable costs, and flexible operation to accommodate the expansion of variable renewables.

Job Summary

Kairos Power’s Launch Program is an 18-month training program that offers early career professionals hands-on learning opportunities. During the program, you will partner with a Launch mentor who will teach you various internal processes and methods through direct and practical projects. This program accelerates the learning process by offering increased exposure to various teams and projects enabling your potential to be a well-rounded engineer. The program intends to start early July 2024.

Kairos Power is seeking a highly motivated Test and Reliability Engineer with expertise relevant to design, construction, operation and maintenance of engineering infrastructure and test equipment, and working with molten salt system. In this role, you will contribute to development and deployment of the company’s molten salt engineering testing capabilities. The candidate must have knowledge of infrastructure, design, operation, and maintenance requirements for test equipment and proven record of successful work in collaboration with engineering teams. You will work in close consultation with mechanical, electrical, I&C, testing, and manufacturing staff to collect operating experience from the Kairos development program and to conduct traditional hazard evaluations such as Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA). The ideal candidate takes pride in their hands-on work, organizational skills, and attention to detail.

Responsibilities

  • Support development of electrical, thermal, and mechanical infrastructure for laboratory systems
  • Interact with engineering and laboratory staff to support implementation of testing program
  • Contribute to manufacturing and assembly of test hardware in collaboration with engineering and manufacturing teams
  • Contribute to software interfaces for experimental control and data acquisition
  • Develop procedures for experiment operation, data collection, and reporting
  • Monitor and maintain ongoing tests in the laboratory
  • Practice safe chemical hygiene and hazardous waste handling
  • Capture lessons learned and operating experience
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering
  • Proficiency in computer methods for data acquisition, control, and analysis
  • Previous laboratory experience is strongly desired
  • Experience with molten salt system is preferred but not required
  • Experience with qualitative and quantitative hazard evaluation (e.g., HAZOPs, FMEA)
  • Experience with hardware manufacturing and assembly is preferred
  • Experience with integrated mechanical, fluids, and chemical systems is preferred
  • Experience with power electronics is preferred
  • Experience with data analysis/automation and ability to develop further experience in R, RMarkdown, Python, git, LaTeX, Bash/Shell/Batch scripting, Docker, VS Code, GitHub, etc. is preferred
  • Proven team player with excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication/presentation skills
  • Ability to work with highly collaborative team and proven team player working with various teams
  • Ability to solve problems quickly and efficiently
  • Prioritizes and ensures safety of one self and others
  • Ability to proactively collect, manage and transfer knowledge
  • Ability to seek different and novel ways to create efficiencies when working on problems, challenges and issues

Physical Conditions

  • Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, scissor lifts, articulated boom lifts and etc. 
  • Setting up and transferring temporary structures (e.g. scaffolding, ladders)
  • Moving self in different positions to accomplish tasks in various environments including tight and confined spaces
  • Remaining in a stationary position, often standing, or sitting for prolonged periods
  • Moving about to accomplish tasks or moving from one worksite to another
  • Adjusting, moving, transporting, installing, positioning, or removing objects up to 50 pounds in all directions
  • Communicating with others to exchange information
  • Use hand tools and power tools

Safety and PPE

  • Reporting issues with equipment or unsafe conditions
  • Wearing PPE including respirators, face shields, gloves, and safety shoes
  • Handling of beryllium (Be)

Travel

  • Some travel may be required up to 30%.

Certification

  • Capable of obtaining forklift, crane, and boom lift certification

Additional Requirements

  • Occasionally requires schedule flexibility

The salary range for this position is $71,400-$85,000 for employees working onsite at our Alameda, CA headquarters. The range provided in this job posting represents the typical range or starting rate of candidates hired in California. Factors that may be used to determine your actual salary may include your education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities, the market data for your work location, and a comparison to other employees already in the role.
