Summary
The Transportation Assistant independently manages the Beneficiary Travel Program, which provides transportation, at Government expense, to beneficiaries and their attendants for the purpose of examination, treatment, or care. This position serves as a primary contact for Veterans, doctors, nurses, and administrative staff to arrange travel for eligible Veterans to appointments and residence, ensuring reimbursements are in accordance with appropriate laws and regulations.

Qualifications
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: At least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-4) in the Federal Service that has equipped you with the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the duties of a Transportation Assistant at the GS-5 level. Qualifying specialized experience is experience where you were responsible for processing request for reimbursement; maintaining fund control points; coordinating work operation; determining eligibility for programs and/or services; reviewing requests; ensuring compliance with regulations and procedures; and communicating effectively with a wide variety of individuals.

EDUCATION: Successful completion of four (4) years above high school in any field which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite. COMBINATION: Equivalent combinations of successfully completed post high school education (beyond the second year) and specialized experience, as described above, which meet the total experience requirements for this grade level. IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Physical Requirements: Requires some mobility between various clinic areas in separate building location sites, but generally the job is sedentary with some standing, stooping, reaching, and lifting up to 20 pounds. The employee is required to work with computer equipment at least 75% of the time which impacts on hand and wrist motions. The work is performed in a business office and an outpatient treatment setting. The work area is adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated. Requires composure in trying to assist veterans, their families and staff, who may be upset or in distress and hostile in manner. Due to changing deadlines and priorities, work may be stressful at times.

Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior work experience or military service experience. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
