About the role:

The Assistant Accountant will focused on ensuring the accurate and timely accounting of indirect tax activities for UK-registered legal entities. This involves reviewing and reconciling tax returns with the general ledger, making necessary adjustments, and ensuring that both UK and US financial accounts accurately reflect the amounts payable and receivable related to indirect taxes. The position requires close collaboration with Finance and Tax teams to analyze indirect tax risks and opportunities, assess their impact on profit and loss, and communicate these insights as part of the FT Group’s financial risk and operating plan process.

Responsibilities:

  • To be a key player in the timely and accurate accounting for indirect tax activity of UK-registered legal entities.

  • Review and reconciliation of returns for indirect tax registrations to the general ledger and timely recording of necessary adjustments. The role will be instrumental in ensuring that the UK and the US financial accounting accurately reflects indirect tax amounts payable and receivable in respect of tax registrations of UK entities.

  • Collaboration with members of the Finance and Tax teams in the analysis of indirect tax-related risks and opportunities and their potential impact on profit and loss, and their subsequent communication to relevant teams as part of FT Group’s financial risk and operating plan process.

  • Preparation of indirect tax balance sheet reconciliations for all UK-registered legal entities in line with FT Group accounting control policy.

  • Completion of month end and year end activities diligently and in accordance with communicated timetables.

  • Identification of areas for efficiency gains and improvements to controls and proactive engagement in the delivery of these.

  • Assistance with ad hoc projects falling within the remit of the UK Financial Control team.

  • Contribution to building a high performing team and a best-in-class financial control function.


Required Skills / Experience:

  • Working towards a relevant accounting qualification (ACCA/CIMA or equivalent)

  • Previous relevant experience in an accounting role – either in industry or in practice (e.g. audit)

  • Consistency, strong attention to detail and communication skills

  • Strong working knowledge of Excel 

  • Experience working with Oracle an advantage

  • Ability to work to demanding deadlines

  • Good interpersonal skills and the ability to work with, influence and persuade finance and non-finance colleagues.

  • Ability to work independently and apply initiative to identify issues, present them to the relevant audience and create practical solutions.

  • Enthusiasm, resilience, drive and commitment, with the ability to work effectively in a constantly changing environment.
