JOB DESCRIPTION:
CNA's US Insurance Operations (USIO) provides standard lines commercial property and casualty insurance products such as General and Product Liability, Property and Commercial Auto, Workers' Compensation, Umbrella Liability and Excess Liability Coverages to businesses of all sizes. Our Commercial standard lines Excess Casualty team underwrites a diverse mix of business and industry classes including Manufacturing, Distributors, Real Estate, Technology, Retail, Hospitality and Professional Services.
Our Excess Casualty Underwriters are high level individual contributors handling lead umbrella and excess accounts, both monoline and over CNA risk management primary accounts. Recognized as technical experts, they drive business results through strong sales, marketing and relationship building skills with external and internal business partners. They are responsible for overall management, business development, growth and profitability of a book business.
The National Accounts Casualty Underwriting Consulting Director role is part of the Business Unit team responsible for the governance and oversight of the National Accounts Casualty Excess Casualty portfolio. This role is SME for underwriting functions in National Accounts Casualty and supports the underwriters with training, coaching while working with leaders across the enterprise to establish underwriting standards, guidelines, manuscript endorsements, forms and filings, pricing strategy, reinsurance usage, underwriting authority standards and the audit process. The position will work with the Legal, Claims, Risk Control and Actuarial s to analyze trends to promote profitable growth.
The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 7+ years of underwriting experience with monoline excess casualty accounts. Individuals should have strong coverage knowledge in underlying primary casualty lines as well as skill in assessing excess exposures to loss, loss analysis and pricing.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Performs a combination of duties in accordance with departmental guidelines:
1. Evaluation and approval of appropriate pricing based on financial and competitive analysis in line with compliance requirements.
2. Participates with leadership in the development and implementation of underwriting guidelines, policy, and manuscript endorsements.
3. Interprets Business Unit strategies and initiatives while assisting in the implementation at the underwriter level.
4. Analyzes quality, quantity, and profitability of the risks underwritten.
5. Confident in freely sharing knowledge and expertise with others, mentoring and guiding less experienced underwriters, and developing and executing underwriting training. Responsible for special underwriting projects and presentations.

AVP or above
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
1. The highest level of technical and product specific expertise, underwriting skill and knowledge of insurance and underwriting principles, practices and procedures.
2. Excellent communication, negotiation and presentation skills. Ability to effectively interact with all levels of CNA's internal and external business partners.
3. Excellent analytical and problem solving skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects.
4. Ability to deal with ambiguous situations and issues.
5. Creativity in resolving unique and challenging business problems.
6. Ability to achieve results by taking a proactive long-term view of business goals and objectives.
7. Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and other business-related software.
8. Demonstrated leadership skills.
Education and Experience
1. Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience. Professional designations preferred.
2. Typically a minimum ten years underwriting experience with proven track record of results.
