National Accounts Casualty provides policyholders with customized primary and excess casualty programs for a broad range of industry segments including: Hospitality, Retail, Financial Institutions, Manufacturing, Real Estate, Technology, and Wholesale Distribution. Coverages include:
- Workers' Compensation
- General Liability
- Auto Liability
- Auto Physical Damage
- Umbrella/Excess
The Underwriting Consulting Director role is part of the Product Strategy & Innovation team within the National Accounts Casualty Business Unit which is responsible for assessing needs and delivering solutions to advance Primary and Excess Casualty. This position will focus on product strategy and development, technical underwriting training and underwriting excellence for Primary Casualty. You will work closely with Business Unit leaders to partner on execution of strategies and governance involving underwriting standards, guidelines, forms, pricing, profitability, authority and audits as well as developing and implementing technical training and supporting underwriters on individual account issues via consultations or referrals. The position will routinely collaborate with other areas of CNA, such as Legal, Claims,Operations, Risk Control and Actuarial.
The ideal candidate will have 10+ years of primary casualty underwriting experience with emphasis on large account loss sensitive structures. Individuals should have strong coverage knowledge in General Liability, Auto and Worker's Compensation as well as skill in assessing exposures to loss, loss analysis and pricing. Superior writing and presentation skills are essential for success in this role.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Performs a combination of duties in accordance with departmental guidelines:
1. Drives underwriting excellence through developing skills of underwriters, managing authority deployment, coaching underwriters and monitoring the audit process.
2. Develops and deploys strategic, consumable underwriting content such as drafting new and updating existing guidelines.
3. Participates with leaders to identify gaps in products and develop solutions.
4. Communicates and collaborates effectively within and external to National Accounts Casualty
5. Designs, develops and deploys high quality technical underwriting training.
6. Supports profitability through partnership with leaders to achieve strategic objectives and through consultations and referral handling on specific accounts.
6. Keeps current on state/territory issues and regulations, industry activity and trends where they may represent the company in industry trade groups.
8. Responsible for special underwriting projects and presentations.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
1. The highest level of technical and product specific expertise, underwriting skill and knowledge of insurance and underwriting principles, practices and procedures.
2. Excellent writing, communication and presentation skills. Ability to effectively interact with all levels of CNA's internal and external business partners.
3. Excellent analytical and problem solving skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects.
4. Ability to deal with ambiguous situations and issues.
5. Creativity in resolving unique and challenging business problems.
6. Ability to achieve results by taking a proactive long-term view of business goals and objectives.
7. Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and other business-related software.
8. Demonstrated leadership skills.
Education and Experience
1. Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience. Professional designations preferred.
2. Typically a minimum ten years underwriting experience with proven track record of results.
