The Underwriting Supervisor reports directly to the Policy Services Manager to effectively manage and coordinate the activities of the underwriters and underwriting support staff. The Underwriting Supervisor leads, manages, motivates and supports the life and health insurance underwriting staff through clear and concise communication, resource allocation, performance management, training and development. The Underwriting Supervisor works closely with other members of the management team to foster and promote a strong team approach to consistently meeting the organization’s established service levels. The Underwriting Supervisor will use his/her experience and expertise to continually identify opportunities for process improvement. The Underwriting Supervisor will lead by example and will always treat their staff with the highest level of respect and professionalism possible.
Responsibilities
- Closely manages the Underwriting workflow on a daily basis to ensure that all applications are being processed within the established service levels.
- Trains and instructs employees in job duties as needed
- Performs daily random audits of all underwriting staff
- Communicates clearly, positively, effectively, professionally and promptly in writing, over the telephone or via electronic mail with external/internal customers. Responds to complaints and process per NTA Life guidelines and provides support to team members.
- Assist with underwriting applications as needed in order to maintain service levels.
- Helps to monitor work place and work practices to ensure safe office conditions, and makes recommendations and/or changes as necessary.
- Conduct regular one-on-one meetings with all direct report to discuss performance issues and address employee concerns
- Conduct regular Underwriting Department meetings to discuss changes or updates to process and procedures.
- Monitor operations and staff, and recommend, when necessary, changes in methods, procedures, structure, and additions to or changes to secure optimum utilization of resources.
- Counsel employees on educational and job opportunities which will enhance their career development, and keep staff informed of current problems, changes, and new developments in the department and company by conducting periodic meetings.
- Other duties as assigned
Requirements
• High school diploma or GED with a Bachelor’s degree in Business preferred or equivalent in related work experience
• Minimum of 3 years as a Underwriting Service Associate or equivalent service experience
• Six years of underwriting and prior experience supervising a department in the insurance industry
• Completion of LOMA FLMI designation and underwriting courses (ALU) desired
