Job Description
The U.S. Public Affairs Director provides central leadership for corporate as well as segment policy priorities, guiding advocacy engagement, as well as issue and stakeholder management. The Director will work with the U.S. Public Affairs team and cross-functionally to shape meaningful policies and to inform and guide the company on the U.S. policy landscape, including but not limited to sustainability and environmental issues.
What are we looking for?
- Ability to manage a diverse and broad range of complex issues and situations.
- Expertise and depth of knowledge in U.S. public policy issues, including 8+ years of legislative and government relations experience in the Washington, D.C. policy arena, including congressional or federal executive/agency experience.
- College/University degree required.
- Experience with and ability to collaborate with multiple internal and external stakeholders.
- Experience with leading multiple projects simultaneously and the ability to track projects with varying deadlines - working independently, hands-on, with fast thinking and proven experience in project and process management.
- Experience in providing strategic counsel to senior executives.
- Shape a policy environment that enables Mars' ability to grow sustainably and to reinvest in our Associates as well as the people and pets we serve.
- Develop and manage the execution of advocacy strategies to reach and engage external stakeholders in support of Mars' policy advocacy objectives.
- Lead U.S. Public Affairs advocacy on sustainability, environmental and packaging policies, among others, including engagement with policymakers and third-party advocacy partners.
- Leverage best-in-class public affairs capabilities to protect and advance Mars, Incorporated's corporate reputation and safeguard its freedom to operate.
What will be your key responsibilities?
- Develop and lead Mars advocacy with the U.S. Congress, U.S. regulatory agencies and support the Mars State and Local Policy Director on a range of issues, including but not limited to, sustainability and the environment.
- Support U.S. Public Affairs, North American segment colleagues and other senior leadership by understanding key and complex policy trends/issues at the market level and developing applicable content for issue management and advocacy.
- Advise and guide the business regarding policy issues and opportunities with expertise and create diverse policy strategies to protect, enhance, or accelerate business strategies.
- Help anticipate and define issues impacting the company and identify areas to bolster the corporate position. Be part of the "early warning system" of risks and opportunities across the region that supports proactive issues management strategies.
