Attention managers and directors! We are the Discovery org of Walmart.com, and we have an opportunity for you. Discovery is a 100+ engineer org focused on providing delightful home, search and product-page functionality for Walmart.com and its iOS and Android apps. We are looking for a talented and motivated leader to drive positive change on our Product Page teams. This role will initially lead the managers and staff engineers of web and iOS/Android teams.
The Walmart.com Product Page is the most visited page on the site, and has a direct impact on customer experience and core business metrics. With a variety of internal and external stakeholders, and a brand new technical foundation, this is the ideal platform for a capable manager/director to drive engineering excellence and culture that will accelerate development of an exciting backlog and maintain world-class operational excellence. About the team
The product page team is currently expanding and will soon have enough engineers to fill four teams: two web/full-stack and two iOS/Android teams. These talented engineers are a mix of full-time and contract team members, and are located around Walmart tech hubs across the countr y, with the majority being located on the west coast . We also work closely with a sibling team in India.
Together with our product management and user experience partners, we obsess about the customer experience and do everything we can to delight the many millions of customers that visit our application each week. This close partnership, and a focus on data-driven decisions drives us to do our best every day.
You'll also be part of the larger Walmart Tech team, including an incredible platform organization that enables the great customer experiences we build. As part of a large organization, we partner closely with specialists from the CDN to internal databases to ensure optimal performance and customer experience.
What you'll do
- Internal-facing: Manage multiple teams directly or through subordinate managers to establish and maintain a top notch engineering culture through positive examples highlighting fairness, career development transparency, documentation and industry-standard practices.
- Provides supervision and development opportunities for associates by selecting and training; mentoring; assigning duties; building a team-based work environment; establishing performance expectations and conducting regular performance evaluations; providing recognition and rewards; coaching for success and improvement; and ensuring diversity awareness.
- Promotes and supports company policies, procedures, mission, values, and standards of ethics and integrity by training and providing direction to others in their use and application; ensuring compliance with them; and utilizing and supporting the Open Door Policy.
- Directs root cause analysis of critical business and production issues by reviewing and analyzing information (for example, issue, impact, criticality, possible root cause); directing actions as designated in the plan; interpreting the results to determine further action; directing root cause analysis to prevent future occurrence of issues; and reviewing and approving online documentation.
- Drives focus and improvement on objective improvement of engineering velocity and technical metrics like availability and application performance.
- External facing: Collaborate with engineering peers, leaders and business stakeholders to identify solutions to technical and business opportunities.
- Supports business objectives by collaborating with business partners to identify opportunities and drive resolution; partnering with business to define priorities; identifying short- and long-term solutions; and leading cross-functional partnership.
- Leads the discovery phase of large projects to develop high level design by partnering with the Product Management, Web Operations, Project Management, Business and User Experience teams; obtaining cross-function approvals; driving proof-of-concept; and implementing prototypes to validate ideas.
- Drives the execution of multiple business plans and projects by identifying customer and operational needs; developing and communicating business plans and priorities; removing barriers and obstacles that impact performance; providing resources; identifying performance standards; measuring progress and adjusting performance accordingly; developing contingency plans; and demonstrating adaptability and supporting continuous learning.
- Ensures business needs are being met by evaluating the ongoing effectiveness of current plans, programs, and initiatives; consulting with business partners, managers, co-workers, or other key stakeholders; soliciting, evaluating, and applying suggestions for improving efficiency and cost- effectiveness; and participating in and supporting community outreach events.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science and 7 years' experience in software engineering or related field OR 7 years' experience in software engineering or related field.
- 3 years' supervisory experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- 1 + years' experience managing through other managers
