About the Department
Devices and Delivery Solutions (DDS) consists of more than 350 colleagues who works dedicated to design and develop innovative medical devices, digital health products, and digital therapeutic solutions for our patients. Only by considering what is valuable from a patient perspective do we help people live their lives to the fullest. We are currently looking for a few Usability Engineers to become a part of our Usability Engineering department, who plays a critical role in the development of future devices and digital health solutions by researching and representing future users throughout the development process. You will join our Usability Engineering team consisting of 12 skilled usability professionals, who enjoy having a collaborative approach when setting direction within the field of usability
The Position
As a Usability Engineer / Human Factors Engineer, you will be an advocate for end users in mid- to late-stage physical or digital medical device development projects. You will be responsible for planning and scoping the right usability activities to ensure the users' perspectives are brought into the product development and authority requirements are met.
Relationships
This position is part of a global Usability Engineering team based in Hillerod, Denmark and Lexington, MA. You will report to a manager based in Denmark, the Head of Usability Engineering who is a Usability Engineer by education and training. As part of a talented and growing team, it is expected that you will also be part of optimizing our research process and activities on an ongoing basis.
Essential Functions
  • Conducting usability evaluations, preferably both formative and summative/HF validation. You will be responsible for study setup design, coordination, execution, analysis, and reporting. Execution of usability evaluations requires excellent interpersonal skills, as you will be interacting directly with a diverse user population as a moderator/interviewer
  • Close collaboration with key stakeholders, such as project managers, risk managers, systems engineers, clinical, design and external vendors
  • Reporting usability evaluations. You will be required to present study results to key stakeholders with diverse professional backgrounds. Being responsible for documentation in the design control phases also means that you will be required to write usability reports of high quality
  • Plan usability engineering activities
  • Drive planning of usability activities in cooperation with the specific device project(s)
  • Develop specific details of the Formative Evaluation Brief according to the needs of the project and in relation to the development phase
  • Author Usability Engineering planning documents
  • Ensure handover of execution to Clinical Operations, supervise CRO input, and ensure Novo Nordisk interests
  • Ensure that Novo Nordisk adheres to local legislation when interacting with users
  • Report usability engineering findings
  • Analyze observations in real time and post-test using video
  • Detailed reporting of all observations including root cause analysis
  • Advise device projects on design changes to optimize device design
  • Execute usability engineering evaluations; Setup and conduct usability evaluations
  • Ensure that protocol is followed or adjusted according to observations
  • Moderate face-to-face interactions with users including lay people and healthcare professionals
  • Project manage Usability Engineering efforts
  • Ensure attendance at project meetings and communicate the information to relevant stakeholders
  • Update plans and ensure deliverables in accordance with the overall project needs
  • Long term planning of usability efforts for projects that will ensure that project needs are met
  • Develop best practice Usability Engineering processes in Novo Nordisk
  • Attend conferences, workshops, and external training to stay updated on current Usability Engineering issues

Physical Requirements
Approximately 10-20 days of travel a year is expected in relation to executing usability tests. This position is hybrid out of our Lexington, MA site.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree required, Advanced degree preferred. Degree within Engineering, Psychology, Natural Sciences, Linguistics, or related field preferred
  • Bachelor's degree with 3+ years' and Master's degree with 1+ years' or PhD with little or no relevant experience can be considered
  • Relevant experience includes:
    • Working experience within Usability Engineering/Human Factors Engineering
    • Experience in an autonomous work environment, showcasing strong decision-making abilities and effective task prioritization skills.
  • Preferred experience includes insert subject matter preferred experience
    • Knowledge and/or professional experience is preferred in the pharmaceutical industry, healthcare industry, regulated medical device development, or another regulated field
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and in teams
  • Detail oriented with excellent written and oral communication skills
