Powerhouse Arts is a not-for-profit organization committed to creative expression. Housed in a purpose-built-facility in Brooklyn, the organization hosts an extended network of art and fabrication professionals and educators who work together to co-create and share artistic practices vital to the well-being of artists and the communities to which they serve. Our new facilities house fabrication services, production services, production spaces, and member workshops for artisans.

Powerhouse is seeking a Vice President of Programs to collaborate with the President, Sr. Vice President, and other senior staff to develop, launch, and implement world-class programming initiatives for the organization. The VP of Programs will take ownership of the organization’s program design and implementation.  This role will work across the organization and with external partners to design, create, and present a series of expansive, inclusive, and remarkable programs, demonstrating the organization’s dedication to creative expression. This role will report directly to the President and manage the Community Engagement + Partnerships Director, Print Fabrication Director, Ceramics Director (Fabrication + Membership), Public Art Director, and Marketing Director.

Responsibilities:

Program Development

  • Define, enhance, and implement the vision for Programs, building off the programmatic structure as established in PHA’s 5-Year Strategic Plan
  • Take ownership of programming at Powerhouse, to include, fabrication and community ceramics programs, community engagement initiatives, and other general programming
  • Design specific program offerings that demonstrate, share, and educate patrons on the organizations’ dedication to creative expression
  • Ensure ongoing programmatic excellence, rigorous program evaluation, and consistent quality of finance, administration, communication, and systems for programs
  • Supervise Fabrication, Community Engagement + Partnerships, and Marketing Teams
  • Begin to build programming partnerships, establishing relationships with neighbor and community organizations
  • Cultivate strategic partnerships with fabrication and education communities and continuously develop knowledge within these fields.
  • Be an external local and national presence that publishes and communicates program results with an emphasis on the successes of the local program as a model for regional and national replication
  • Supervise the Marketing and PR teams, working closely to develop ongoing PR, press, and marketing strategies
  • Play key role in development and fundraising for youth and education programs, including drafting narratives, program budgets for grant proposals and end of grant term reports .
  • Oversee the development and or collaborate on curriculum creation for all courses and workshops.
  • Oversee and maintain relationships with NYC DOE and CTE
  • Develop and oversee department budget and monitor expenses
  • Actively engage and energize Powerhouse Arts’ stakeholders, board members, partnering organizations, and funders on programming
  • Recruit, lead, coach, develop, and retain programs and external-facing teams
  • Align staffing, programs, and business structures with Powerhouse’s commitment to becoming a multicultural, inclusive workplace and service organization
  • Ensure effective systems to track scaling progress, and regularly evaluate program components in order to measure successes that can be effectively communicated to the board, funders, and constituents
  • Collaborate with Development Director to develop a plan for local generation and fundraising activities to support existing and planned program operations
  • Deepen and refine all communication from web presence to external relations with the goal of creating a stronger public identity
  • Support a strong Board of Directors; seek and build board involvement with strategic direction for both ongoing and future programming

  • Deep and sustained working relationship with contemporary artists
  • At least 10 years of senior management or program design experience
  • Unwavering commitment to delivering quality programs and program evaluation
  • Excellence in organizational management with the ability to coach staff, manage, and develop high-performance teams, set and achieve strategic objectives, and manage a budget
  • Past success working with a variety of personalities and working styles
  • Strong marketing experience with the ability to engage a wide range of stakeholders and cultures
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; a persuasive and passionate communicator with excellent interpersonal and multidisciplinary project skills
  • Action-oriented, entrepreneurial, adaptable, and innovative approach to program and business planning
  • Ability to work effectively in collaboration with diverse groups of people
  • Passion, idealism, integrity, positive attitude, mission-driven, and self-directed
  • Demonstrated cultural competency, commitment to anti-racism and to the creation of an anti-biased organizational culture

Compensation & Benefits: Salary range is $160,00 to $200,00 and commensurate with experience. Benefits include health insurance, an employer-sponsored retirement plan, generous paid vacation, and a Citibike membership.
