The Role

Reporting to the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), this leader brings a strong background and interest in leading Total Rewards in an emerging, high-growth, public cannabis company.   Green Thumb has a great diverse team of employees across our manufacturing, retail, and corporate groups who have joined us through organic growth and acquisition.  We look to optimize and align our compensation and benefits mix and investment to attract, retain, and motivate our people in line with our growth strategy.  In addition to ensuring our compensation plans are well-understood, valued, and flawlessly administered, this position will strengthen our systems and reporting, manage risk, cultivate our talent, and develop the right amount of process as we grow.  We are looking for someone who welcomes solving problems, exceptional business judgment, relationship skills, and the ability to be hands-on and execute for impact.  This position is based at our headquarters in Chicago, IL.

Responsibilities
  • Leadership
    • Humble leader who enjoys interacting with all levels of the organization, including hourly and salaried employees, Senior Management, and the Board of Directors.
    • Partners with the CAO and Rewards team to continue to strengthen our compensation and benefits plans and overall support infrastructure.
    • Develops rewards, payroll, and HRIS team members to grow bench strength and expertise. Inspires team spirit among the team.  Provides backup and support.
    • Builds relationships and establishes a strategic communication loop with the HR and recruiting team members including in our sites and stores regarding compensation and benefits matters.
  • Executive Compensation
    • Subject matter expertise in key areas of public company Executive Compensation (annual and long-term incentives, Proxy disclosures, compensation benchmarking, Board of Director Compensation, corporate governance, etc.).
    • Comfortable preparing materials and presenting at meetings of the Compensation Committee and owning the operational cadence for agenda items and coordination with other internal and external partners.
    • Works closely with internal partners, especially in Finance and Legal
    • Ability to think creatively and strategically with external offers while working collaboratively with internal partners, especially analysis around sign-on equity grants
    • Lead ongoing education communication for equity; passion for equity and patience to explain all facets of equity compensation including the basics but also how to effectively navigate the online equity system.
  • Broad Based Compensation and Annual Review Process
    • Partners with the CAO and business stakeholders to execute and communicate the organization’s compensation plans to attract and retain top talent and optimize compensation spend.
    • Supports compensation benchmarking strategy and analyses.
  • Equity Plan Administration
    • Expertise and comfort with managing the equity administration strategy, both from a macro and micro level.
    • With support of third-party outsourced vendor and other internal team members, responsible for administration of equity programs.
    • Day to day administration may include maintenance of data (e.g., new hires, terminations, agreements, etc.) and account information, ensuring that all participant equity plan transactions (RSU and options grants, exercises, releases, vesting forfeitures, etc.) are correctly processed and settled in a timely manner.
    • Serves as an equity administration resource to participants, vendors, and business partners, providing them with complete and accurate information. Partners with Finance, Legal, and Payroll for accurate reporting including for SEC filings (e.g., proxy) and with internal and external auditors to perform routine audits. Adheres to all SOX and other established controls, reviewing and updating controls as needed. Manages our Global Shares vendor.
    • Completes surveys and assists with compiling benchmark data for equity plans.
  • Benefits
    • Works closely with the Benefits leader and Benefits team.
    • Communication of benefits programs and updates so HR Business Partners are informed as well as direct communication with employees.
    • Close attention to detail and ongoing review to ensure benefit programs are producing a high ROI for our employees and GTI.
    • Ongoing review of vendors and partners to ensure the highest level of quality and costs are being realized.
    • Partners with the team to develop and deliver strategic recommendations to ensure benefit programs meet the needs of the business and diverse workforce and meet compliance requirements.
    • Partners closely with Benefits leader and broker on the annual medical renewal process, including strategic and financial planning for good and informed decisions.
  • Compliance and Operations
    • Policies and Process: Identifies, recommends, and executes against opportunities to strengthen and simplify our policies, systems, and processes. 
    • Regulatory Compliance: Collaborates with legal and finance teams on regulatory matters to comply with all compensation and operational regulations.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree. MBA or JD a plus
  • 10+ years progressively responsible and hands-on business experience in compensation with expert knowledge of Executive Compensation and equity plans and benefits
  • Public company experience required
  • Experience working for a Compensation consulting firm or experience partnering with these firms would be beneficial.
  • Exceptional business judgment with an entrepreneurial style and a client-service and practical approach.
  • Natural rapport-builder with exceptional collaboration and communication skills
  • Exceptional ability to work with, influence, coach, and facilitate at all levels
  • History of building positive relationships internally and externally
  • Enjoys change and adapts constructively

  • Must have an interest in learning Cannabis specific rules that a Federally illegal business must adhere to, especially as they impact our Total Rewards programs and strategies.
