Job Description

At Carrum, we live and breathe the mission of transforming the healthcare system to create an unmatched experience for patients. If you are passionate about changing healthcare and want to finally get rid of surprise bills, poor quality, and high prices, while thriving in an entrepreneurial, cutting-edge environment, we would love to connect with you.

In 2014 Carrum reinvented the Center of Excellence (CoE) category in digital health. We are the only company in this space with a digital platform and mobile app powering this novel marketplace. Today, most of the US population lives within a 3 hour driving distance of a Carrum CoE and our providers rank in the top 10% nationally. Our team’s execution has been recognized by the venture community and we’ve raised more than $50M in aggregate from investors like Tiger Global Management and Wildcat Ventures. Our impact has been externally proven in a 2021 RAND Corporation study and featured as a Harvard Business School (HBS) case study.

We are seeking a highly skilled Vice President of Engineering to be a key member of our Management team.  This role will report to the Chief Technology Officer and be responsible for leading our software development and DevSecOps teams. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in software engineering as well as cloud infrastructure management, and loves the intensity of a high-growth startup.

This is a full time position, the salary range for this role is $200,000 - $250,000 plus bonus, depending on level of experience and geographic location.

You’re excited about this opportunity because you will...

  • Be a strong partner with the CTO in designing and developing the architecture of the platform that supports growing and constantly evolving business needs.
  • Oversee the design, development, and maintenance of the company’s technology platform, ensuring it meets the highest standards of performance, scalability, and security.
  • Work closely with product management and other stakeholders to prioritize features, resolve technical challenges, and ensure alignment on requirements and priorities.
  • Oversee and enhance agile development methodologies, ensuring cross-functional teams are delivering the needed high-quality software on time.
  • Continue to promote a user-centric approach to product development, ensuring solutions are intuitive, effective, and address user needs.
  • Lead, mentor, and continue to grow our already high-performing Engineering and DevSecOps teams, fostering a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • Collaborate with executive leadership to define the company's technical roadmap, aligning engineering initiatives with business objectives.
  • Continue to develop and implement best practices, processes, and standards to ensure high-quality product development and delivery on a scalable platform.
  • Be a clear designer and maintainer of the next generation of our container-based infrastructure without the hassle of legacy nonsense getting in the way of efficient innovation and performance

We’re excited about you because…

  • At least 10 years of experience as a technology professional with demonstrated experience  managing and leading high-performing teams.
  • Proven experience leading engineering and DevOps teams in a startup environment, ideally within the healthcare sector.
  • Strong technical background with expertise in software development, AWS cloud computing, data analytics, and cybersecurity.
  • Bonus if you have in-depth knowledge of healthcare industry regulations and standards, including HIPAA.
  • Experience with compliance, governance, and maintaining policies and procedures that meet SOC2 or HITRUST standards
  • Expertise in several programming languages (e.g. SQL, Python, Ruby) and API development to maintain and build robust and purposeful system services.
  • You can strategically build and manage the team but have no problem rolling up your sleeves and getting in the weeds while doing so.
  • Ability to work under tight deadlines while balancing competing priorities. Excellent written and verbal communications, including the ability to clearly and concisely articulate complex concepts to both technical and non-technical collaborators
  • Entrepreneurial and resourceful with a history of finding creative ways to make a big impact quickly and without much direction.
  • Experience handling deadlines, keeping many balls in the air, and prioritizing work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
  • Passion for collaborating cross-functionally with sales, customer success, operations, data, and product teams to ideate, complete projects, and drive impactful results.

Why you’ll love working with us...

  • We’re a hard-working, humble, and compassionate group motivated to solve the hard problems in healthcare today. You’ll work with talented, experienced co-workers from companies like Booz & Company, Livongo, 98point6, Google, and Optum. We believe in using data to inform decisions, technology to make our jobs easier, and creative thinking to pave the future.
  • We are working with some of the most recognized and esteemed names in the country. Top hospitals like Johns Hopkins, Mayo Clinic, Stanford Health Care, Scripps Health, and Rush Health have joined our platform. Employers who use our benefit include Walgreens, US Foods, United Airlines, and large public sector organizations like the self-insured schools of California, and the State of Maine.
  • We empower team members to be autonomous and provide a collaborative environment where you get support and healthy feedback. You can bring your authentic self to work every day and are encouraged to help others do the same.
  • We carve out time to let go of work to celebrate our successes and have fun. We’re all working remotely right now, but prior to the pandemic a few of the monthly activities we enjoyed included group dinners, bowling, and hiking. Now we bring the fun online with holiday costume contests, arts and crafts activities, musical events, weekly meditations, and gratitude sessions.
  • You’ll feel proud that the work you do each day directly impacts people’s lives in big and meaningful ways.

Other benefits:

  • Stock option plan
  • Flexible schedules and remote work
  • Chicago and San Francisco offices available
  • Self-managed vacation days, within reason
  • Paid parental leave
  • Health, vision, and dental insurance
  • 401K retirement plan
